Stephanie Kuleba led the perfect high school life — she was head cheerleader, had good grades and was planning on attending the University of Florida this fall as a pre-med student.
But the high school senior, 18, felt something was missing: perfect breasts.
When she died last Thursday from surgery complications stemming from a breast augmentation, her friends were shocked.
"It's hard to believe she's gone," classmate Vanessa Villegas, 16, told the New York Daily News. "She just made everybody's day by having a good attitude about life."
Kuleba — who was upset that her breasts were not the same size, and that one nipple was inverted — died from a reaction to the anesthesia. She was taken to an area hospital from the outpatient facility in which she went under the knife.
"The surgery itself was very personal," Benny Perlman, a family spokesman, told the Daily News.
Meanwhile, her high school pals held a candlelight vigil at school — displaying her silver cheerleader pompons on a fence, and decorating the senior parking spot, where she'd normally park her Lexus, with flowers, photos and teddy bears.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that the number of women 18 years and younger who have had their breasts enlarged has risen by almost 500 percent over the past decade.
The surgery costs $4,000 on average.
Tell Us: Do you think 18-years-old is too young to get plastic surgery?

I don't agree with plastic surgery and my first instinct when I heard this was serves em right, but after looking at her and why she did it...it is kinda sad.
she died from malignant hypertension which was triggered while she was under anesthesia, what they aren't telling you is that the facility in which she recieved the augmentation did not have the proper medication on hand in case of this reaction. the meds serve as like an anti-venom for a snake bite, once injected it brings you out of sedation. it's the doctors fault she's dead for not being properly certified and prepared for an allergic reaction.
Alls I have to say is SPOILED, SPOILED, oh and SPOILED!!!! I'd rather be liked for my brains and sense of humor and could care less about what others think of my boobs.
its not the point...this tragedy opened up alot of peoples eyes..whether she died from the anesthesia or not..its rediculous that she put her life at risk.shes 18 and shes still a little girl. her parents are sick for letting her get them done, boobs are completely overrated. no one cares that much about what yours boobs look like, love your body the way it is, and the girl who said she got breast implants at age 17, your pathetic. your boobs probably werent even fully grown yet, spend ur parents money on something useful
For what it's worth, this only makes national headlines because she's white.
It's a sad story and no one's doubting that, but what kind of parents let their kid get implants at age 18? Sure she would have probably had a serious/life threatening reaction from any type of general surgery, but she died over implants?!
In the article it mentioned she was going to UoF as a pre-med, and someone commented "pre-med... yea right." Millions of college kids start out as or say they are pre-med at some point each year. Very few of those kids actually do well enough in school and on their MCATs to even think about applying to medical school.
There was no deformity for petes sake, it wasnt life threatening. So she had an inverted nip and one boob a bit smaller than the other....whoopie!! Guess that calls for a implants...Pathetic. She obviously liked showing off her old ones. Can imagine what she would have done with the new set. Put yourself out there like this and expect criticism...
Pre-med?!?!?!? Yeah right...that seems exactly like the kind of person who ends up being a doctor. LOL.
Three things jump out at me from this article (ok...maybe 4 LOL).
1) 18 year old getting needless surgery. Yes, they say that this was a "corrective proceedure", but from the looks of her picture, the breasts that I see spilling out from her very low cut dress seem fine enough. Her body isn't finished developing yet and perhaps her very slightly smaller breast would have adjusted with maturity.
2) A Lexus? Really? An 18 year old kid driving a Lexus? I think perhaps the values in this home are a bit shallow.
3) read point #1 again. She's 18 years old and she's dressed with her boobs hanging out. She couldn't have been that embarrased by their appearance. It seems that she was very willing to show the world what she had.
This is a very sad story and my heart breaks for her family. Cosmetic surgery is being taken too lightly these days. Surgery is surgery. If you're not happy with what you have, get a Wonderbra! Don't go under the knife for something so frivilous.
I think that if you have self esteem problems and someway you look I think its fine to get it "fixed" as long as its not a all the time thing, like every week going in to get something else done. I've had a nose job (which i had at 18) and my mom is about to have her stomach tucked. My nose was a big problem for me cause people always talked about how ugly and big it was and now after everything (I'm 22 now) I feel much better. Its her personal life no one should get invovled but her parents!
I think it's ridiculous for an 18 year old to have breast implants. No one's breasts are perfect, and they do have bras to help out. If I ever caught my daughter dressing like the two girls in that picture, I'd be very upset. I understand about having low self-esteem, but to go under the knife to correct something that's completely mental, is completely stupid.
This is a sad, sad story. Who cares why she went under the knife?--She died way too young. Let it end there.
if she died from anesthesia complications, her death had nothing to do with her breast implants. she more than likely had malignant hypertension, in which she could have died regardless of if she was having breast implants, her tonsils removed, or any other type of surgery or procedure requiring general anesthesia.
Did anyone stop and think that this could have happened with any surgery this girl would have had? This has nothing to do with getting breast implants...she was alergic to the anesthesia.
This whole thing is disturbing to me! What parents would let their daughter get this kind of surgery at 18???? I am very sad for the family and wish that this never happened but maybe it's a lesson learned for other young girls who are wanting to have this type of surgery done. God bless this family!
This is what happens when someone cares so much about being perfect and they don't take in to consideration that they are risking their life to look like a Barbie Doll. I don't feel sorry for anybody who is that selfish and ignorant.
Spend the money on specially made bras to even things out. When you are so young, you don't know if nature will take care of it without risking you life. The risk is not worth it for any reason. And YES, it is vanity. If it is that important to look a certain way, it is vanity.
I don't know why I am wasting my time to comment, because the mean heartless people won't care either way BUT...I had corrective breast surgery at 17 and it was the best decision that I ever made. I am so thankful that my parents supported me and allowed me to have the procedure. It's not vanity. Until you go to a store and leave crying because you can see the uneveness of your breasts in EVERY prom dress you try on, you don't know how it feels or what it has to do with. If you think prom dresses are bad....wait until bathing suit season. Of course US Weekly found the worst picture they could....its a gossip magazine, thats what they do. And you know what, go her for having enough confidance anyways to dress sexy. She WAS 18, not 14. It is so sad to see such a tragedy and my thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.
If this was anyone else, you probably would be making a big deal....would you?
Also, 18 is the age where your parents have no say in your medical business (unless they are your benificaary and you are on your death bed) This has nothing to do with getting your breast done, this could have happenedgetting your tongsils done or brian surgery. Always before going into surgery, the doctor asks you if you are allergic or had a reatiion to anesthesia, and this girl probably never had a surgery before, so she didnt know shes was allergic, or the anesthesia was bad.
I'm surprised at how evil people are. This girl is laying in a coffin and people seem to be more concerned with her looking trashy in a photo. Wow. She was an adult and so wasn't Kanye West's mother, bottom line is they both died. We're not talking about an underage 15 year old here. She was just getting a correction, Kanye's mother was nipping and tucking everywhere, but because she's a mother, and she's old it makes it okay that she died? Sick sick people.
You people who keep saying 'fake boobs' are annoying the heck out of me. There is nothing fake going into her body, this was a corrections procedure. You're an adult at 18 - don't tell me you can vote for who runs the country but you can't make a decision about fixing your own body. Why is everyone saying she should be 21? Cause you can drink? Oh great, associate getting drunk with making decisions about plastic surgery. You people are BRILLIANT.

I couldnt have said it better. The only shallow people here are you people putting her down. What if this were your daughter? I think its shallow and disrespectful beyond beleif that youwould say hatful things about a people who just died! I am appauled at Americans sometimes. My condolences out the friends and Family of this teen.
Okay people there's a BIG PROBLEM here! First, what the hell is a teenager doing driving a LEXUS? Second, why the hell would a parent let a teenager get a breast augmentation? STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES! That's what is wrong with kids today, TOO MUCH TOO SOON! They don't have to WORK for anything and are not taught the value of a dollar nor are they being taught any WORK ETHIC'S! Jesus and this is our FUTURE????
Age had nothing to do with this particular incident. She had a REACTION to the anesthesia, which would have happened at 18, 21 or 50! It is very rare, but still a risk and this was just a very sad thing to happen to such a bright young woman.
She was correcting a deformity anyway, so I think it's unfair to call her shallow. Just because she didn't want to continue with something that made her feel embarrassed and less confident.
Besides, on the issue of plastic surgery in general, don't we all do pretty much what ever is within our means and wants to look better and feel more confident about ourselves? Wear make-up, dye our hair, buy expensive new jeans, try the latest cellulite cream? Just because someone has the money and desire to do something more drastic and permanent should not be seen as any more shallow than anything else. Because we all do it in our own little ways.
my sentiments exactally pat!!!!! what in the world is wrong with teenagers this day and age let alone there parents!!!!
I feel sorry for this girls family, but they should have made her wait until she was over 21 years old to have this surgery. If these girls did not like to show there breast and wear revealing clothes it would not be a problem. Too many of these young girls are dressing like they are strippers instead of young women. When the parents put their foot down and stop the madness all these breast implants and other plastic surgeries are going to stop. We as women and mothers have to reinforce to our children that they are perfect and beautiful without all this madness. I blame all these so call movies stars who have breast implants that are so big that is all they have going for them. We need to teach our girls to have faith and self esteem about themselves, not that sh** they see on tv. Look at what is going on with Lindsey, Brittany , her sister and all the other young girls. Their lives are spoiled and they are nothing to look up to . Please before any more young girls die parents please try to talk to your daughters, tell them that their bodies are still changing and give nature a chance to fix whatever they think is wrong. Please, we cant afford to lose our future, please I will pray for this family and all of you that feel you must look like something that is not real.
i had surgery to correct breast asymmetry when i was 21. i had no complications and i wish this girl had been as lucky. all these people calling her vain and stupid make me ill. any of you oh-so-smug commenters ever had a cosmetic procedure of some kind? braces? dyed your hair? isn't all of that vain in some way? get over yourselves! why trash a young girl and her family simply because YOU wouldn't have made the same choice? they have lost their daughter, have some compassion.
the girls in that picture look so fake. they're going to grow up looking like Pamela Anderson. Yeah, i'd be really happy about that. Poor rich girls who want to look like tramps. There is much more to life than fake boobs, your Lexus and the popular crowd. Grow up!
A friend of mine's daughter had uneven breasts (so much, that it was terribly noticeable), and at that age, it was SO embarassing (I'm guessing that that is why US magazine mentions it, so that any half-brained reader would see that the surgery was to correct a deformity).
The daughter opted for surgery at 17, which I would gladly give to my daughter if she had such a problem. It's easy to judge and say "just live with it" when it's NOT YOU! Do YOU have some MAJOR imperfection which keeps you from looking NORMAL in clothing? I truly doubt it. if you did, you would understand the pain that a teenager would go through.
My heart goes out to this family..rich, poor, whatever..the poor child is still DEAD!
