i feel thats perfectly normal whether silently or verbally to have a preference but in the end like Salma a real "mother" appreciates her gift and loves them all the same.

you know, she didn't say she STILL wanted a boy. she said, when she got pregnant and during her pregnancy she wanted a a boy. now that she has a girl she can't imagine having had a boy. i can totally understand what she said and felt. i grew up with 4 brothers and no sisters and so desperately wanted to have little girls. when i got pregnant, i wished in my heart of hearts to have a little girl and almost immediately upon conception was positive i was having a boy. when i saw the ultrasound and realized i definitely was having a boy, i had a nanosecond of disappointment. (this was in my 4th month of pregnancy). the rest of my pregnancy i began to embrace my little boy and by the time he was born, i was ecstatic that i was going to be the mom of a little boy. it was as if the lord knew better than i did. immediately upon his arrival, just like salma, i couldn't imagine having had what i "wanted". my son (now 16) knows all about this and we joke about it sometimes. i feel so grateful that i got a boy and not a girl, and my son knows that, too.
you people who condemn her for being honest, i feel sorry for. you must spend a lot of energy in your lives keeping secrets and telling lies. how sad.

I have 2 friends who have been married for 4 years and found out they cannot have children of their own....How selfish for someone to say they would've prefered something else than what they got! My friends cannot have ANY kids!!

a lot of people say what she said. what difference does it make? she did say she was pleased that she had a girl...goodness, people are so willing to jump on every word and make it into something it's not these days...perhaps they are not satisfied with their own lives, perhaps they are miserable beings and feel the need to attack anyone at the first thought of scandal, scandal that doesn't even exist. it's pathetic. really, it is.

I agree Snoop. I think every preggers woman I've known had a preference, be it a boy OR a girl. Some wanted a girl, some wanted a boy. So what? You don't always get what you want, but I've yet to know anyone that wasn't happy after the child was born. I think a lot of people would like a boy to carry on the family name. That's not so weird. People are making WAY too much of this.

Why get engaged if you aren't going to get married then!

I think daughters hurt their mothers and mothers hurt their daughters, that does not mean they don't love them.
I am my mom's only child and we have our disagreements, but now that I have a daughter of my own, I am more able to understand my mother more. I love my little girl and yes I also hoped for a boy, but now I could not imagine not having my little girl, she is the only person in the whole world that matters and she thinks I am cool and that is enough for me, and at 6 years old right now she wants to be just like me. Who else wants to do that. That is why having a little girl is awesome.

This was not about one over the other, it's usually the girls that are not wanted (by their mothers), and not the boys! She says it clearly: conflict between mothers and daughters! I lived through this and I also had a brother, so I could compare. At first you don't realize, I loved my mom more than anyone else for most of my childhood (still love her...), then you start noticing the signs, more and more, till you finally figure out what's going on. It never goes away, after these women scar their daughters, if allowed to, they just go on to scar their grand-daughters.

It is so sad when women think this way. I just cannot understand. It's doing a lot of damage to so many girls in this world. Women, pleeeeez: when you think this way, just go and adopt a boy, you'll never change, don't damage your daughters for life!

I can relate. I don't think it's a bad thing to say at all. I have two little girls who are my WORLD, but there is a scary thing about being the mother to daughters even though it is also so so wonderful.

There is nothing wrong with what she said. Lots of people have these feelings, myself included. With both my pregnancies I hoped to have a girl...and I have two adorable little boys! Of course they are both wonderful and I can't imagine it being any different now!

What a horrible thing to confess! I can only imagine what that little girl is going to feel when she reads this when she grows up. I think there are some things you might feel, but should never, ever say in an interview. I just lost all respect for Ms. Hayek.

I think she is just scared that her relationship with her own mother, or lack of by the sounds of it, are going to come back to haunt her. It's a natural fear especially if you know you put your parents through hell. If her mother was just a difficult to get along with person then hopefully she can use it as a learning lesson as to how she does or doesnt want to raise her daughter. No matter the gender they all have something special to give in their own different ways. Enjoy them while they are here, you are never promised tomorrow :)

I wanted a girl, but I now have 3 boys and I could not imagine what our home would be like with a little girl, and my husband and I love having all boys, I espically do because they are all mama's boys and I would not have it any other way.
