Tim Russert's Friday death was confirmed to be a heart attack according to his doctor.

In a statement detailing the results of Russert's autopsy, Dr. Michael Newman explained the famous newsman, 58, was "known to have asymptomatic coronary artery disease (atherosclerosis), which resulted in hardening of his coronary arteries.

"The autopsy revealed an enlarged heart and significant atherosclerosis of the left anterior descending coronary artery with a fresh clot, which caused a heart attack resulting in a fatal ventricular arrhythmia," Newman added.

Still, Newman expressed surprise in his sudden death, as Russert's stress level was judged to be "normal" after an April 29 test, and he exercised on a treadmill the morning he died.

"At a high level of exercise, he had no symptoms," Newman said.

Russert died Friday afternoon while recording voice-overs for his show Meet the Press.
