The age range is 16-27

It will make Idol interesting to let the singers accompany themselves if that's what they do, but it will change the show, too, so I think it's ballsey to go there after several seasons.

The debate about if it's possible to be a REAL musician if one doesn't read music is always amusing. Answer: no, it's not necessary, there was music long before there was sheet music and music geeks to transpose melodies to paper.

And who made you the expert? My father was a professional piano player and he never did read music. He could listen to a song ONCE and play it perfectly. He played piano on several albums and played in a band for over twenty-five years. I'm pretty sure that makes him a "real musician".

I think it is great that the people on the show that can play instruments will be able to. it's a good way to spice up the show. But i do hope they will only allow people who can play play thier instruments.

Adding the musician factor is going to get this show cancelled. This sucks ducks.

Most people who play guitar, bass and drums don't read music. And tab doesn't count as reading music.

I'm not at all looking forward to them being able to play an instrument and sing.

What does reading music have to do with anything? You don't need to read music to play it or write it. Plenty of great rock and rollers never bothered to learn to read music fluently. Edward Van Halen jumps to mind.
