Anne Hathaway's Ex-Beau on Home Detention; Bail Set at $21 Million
Wednesday June 25, 2008
![]() Dimitrios Kambouris/WireImage.com Anne Hathaway's ex Raffaello Follieri appeared in Manhattan federal court Tuesday to face 12 counts of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering. Judge Henry B. Pitman set bail at $21 million ($16 million must be paid in cash or by liquid assets or property; $5 million must come from financially responsible co-signers). Follieri, a 29-year-old Italian businessman, was also forced to hand over all travel documents and placed on home detention. He is not allowed to leave his NYC home except for legal, religious and medical reasons. (If he leaves, he must wear an electronic-monitoring device.) Federal prosecutors argued that they had "overwhelming" evidence that Follieri improperly spent up to $6 million from investors to live a lavish lifestyle — including expensive restaurants and clothes; a privately chartered jet with Hathaway; dog walking services; an opulent NYC apartment that leased for approximately $37,000 per month. (Prosecutors even accused Follieri of falsely telling an investor that the Vatican formally appointed him to manage its financial affairs, so he could buy Catholic Church properties at bargain prices.) At court, Follieri (who could get life in prison) appeared angry, often shaking his head or interrupting his attorney to tell her what to say, the Associated Press reports. At one point, when a prosecutor accused him of owing various debts, he yelled out, "We paid that," according to the AP. "In short, your honor, he is a con man, and he was able to defraud a lot of people out of a lot of money over a long period of time," Prosecutor Reed Michael Brodsky said. (Brodsky had asked the judge to deny Follieri bail, claiming Follieri had the money and connections to flee. He also said Follieri should be deported because he is not a U.S. citizen.) The prosecutor also claimed Follieri tested positive for opiates during a routine drug test shortly after his arrest Tuesday morning. After his court appearance, Follieri — who is ailing from a sinus infection, according to press reports — suffered “some sort of attack,” his lawyer said, and was taken to a hospital, the AP reports. His condition remains unknown. His lawyer, Flora Edwards, told the AP: "We're going to move forward and hope for a speedy resolution to this matter." A source told Usmagazine.com last week that Hathaway split with Follieri after four years because of his legal woes. "All the shady stuff was too much," the source said.
