From frumpy to fabulous! In The Devil Wears Prada (out June 30), Anne Hathaway, 23, plays Andy, a dowdy aspiring NYC journalist who stumbles into a job at fashion’s top magazine: Runway. As an assistant to its diva editor portrayed by Meryl Streep, 57, (“She’s the best actress in the world,” Hathaway coos.), Hathaway’s character reinvents herself as an impeccably dressed fashionista.

“I wanted to keep the Chanel boots," the actress tells Us. "My love of Chanel is out of my control! I also fell in love with Valentino. Now I can wear it without feeling like I’m raiding my mother’s closet.”

Though costar Emily Blunt says she was told to lose weight to “on the edge of sickness thin” for her role in the film, Hathaway was asked to pack it on. “The director said I had to gain 10 pounds [before filming began]. I was like, ‘No problem!’ I ate pizza, beer, ice cream – the college diet. I condensed the freshman year into just four weeks.”

Has she always wanted to be an actress? “For about three years, I thought I wanted to be a nun,” Hathaway confesses. “I also wanted to be president!”
