British director Anthony Minghella has died at the age of 54, his agent told the Associated Press.
He suffered a brain hemorrhage early Tuesday morning at Charing Cross Hospital in London, where he had undergone a routine operation on his neck, a spokesman said, according to Variety.
In 1997, Minghella won the Academy Award for Best Director for the epic romance The English Patient.
He went on to direct The Talented Mr. Ripley, starring Matt Damon.
He leaves behind a wife, choreographer Carolyn Choa, and two children.

"The Talented Mr. Ripley" is one of the most gorgeously-shot movies I've ever seen; it makes you fall completely in love with Italy. What a shame that such a talent is gone.

Anthony Minghella was one of the few genuine old Hollywood/Pinewood-style auteur writer-directors. I am mourning all the other great films he would have made that we will now never see. A terrible waste.
"The Talented Mr. Ripley" is one of the greatest films of the 90s, and an amazing contribution to the cinematographic canon.
