Avril Lavigne
Born in sleepy Napanee, Ontario, Avril was displaying her musical gifts by age 2. She quickly found an audience by singing in church choirs and at county fairs. By 17, she was queen of the pop charts thanks to her natural good looks, a trademark tie-over-a-T-shirt costume, and a carefully packaged anti-authority image that set her apart from the Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson types that preceded her.
Avril famously blamed her over-protective bodyguards for guaranteeing she never had a boyfriend, although she admitted that Limp Bizkit singer Fred Durst had tried to impress his way into her bed by taking a private jet to see one of her concerts (it didn’t work). After dating for two years, Avril married Sum 41 singer Deryck Whibley on July 15, 2006.
By 16, Avril had already been noticed by major label producers, and she was 17 when her debut single "Complicated" exploded in 2002. Thanks to other big hits "Sk8er Boi" and "I’m With You", the album Let Go quickly went multi-platinum and landed her on pretty much every magazine cover from Maxim to Cosmo Girl. Her follow-up Under My Skin, despite the #1 single "My Happy Ending", fell short of that mark, and Avril took some time out of the limelight. Avril recently released her third album, The Best Damn Thing, on April 17, 2007. The album debuted at number one on the charts and her single "Girlfriend" was her first to hit number one. In March 2008, the singer announced plans for her clothing line, Abbey Dawn - named after the nickname her dad calls her - to debut at Kohl's stores nationwide in summer 2008. In May 2008, the singer was forced to postponed six dates on her U.S. "Best Damn Tour" after falling ill with acute laryngitis.
