Bernie Mac Public Memorial Set for Saturday

A public memorial for late comedian Bernie Mac — who died Saturday at age 50 of complications from pneumonia — will be held Saturday in Chicago.

Services are scheduled for noon in the 10,000-seat House of Hope at 752 E. 114th St.

Donations in Mac's honor may be sent to:
The Bernie Mac Foundation for Sarcoidosis
40 E. 9th St., Suite 601
Chicago, IL 60605.

Ironically, Mac and Isaac Hayes (who died at age 65 on Sunday) were to appear in Samuel L. Jackson's upcoming film Soul Men.

Both were to play former soul singers who haven't spoken in 20 years — and agree to travel cross country to attend a reunion concert at NYC's Apollo Theatre.

Mac's sudden passing shocked fans over the weekend. Though the comedian's family initially expected him to recover (he had been hospitalized since July 24), his daughter Je'niece Childress tells the Associated Press that "as the weeks went on, I kind of knew" that was unlikely.

A day after Mac's passing, Hayes was found unresponsive near an exercise machine at his Memphis home.

A cause of death is still being determined, though it has been reported that he most likely died of natural causes.

It is really odd the death of Bernie is really bothing me he was such a real man. I loved the way he loved his family and stardom didn't get to him and was faithful to his wife and hated being away from her. I just cannot get this off my mind. My daughters father died when my daughter was 5 months. I know how it feel to loss the good ones. He gave good messages to kids. He was just a funny person. Sorry to see him go. The chill you got was him and he will always be with you, i can see how much you loved one another and that is beautiful. My heart goes out to your family. Only the good die young! Bernie and all those comedians that are gone are probably cracking jokes and makin' God laugh.

I am so shocked to learn of Bernie Mac's death. He was truly a funny man and a man that believed in family. My children and my self enjoyed his television show and his movies especially "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". I believe those characters represented the true Bernie Mac!! how sad is this one is gone now the other they both will be missed dearly Bernie Mac for his comedy and Issac Hayes for his music this is hurtful to me because BernieMac was my role model and i always dreamed of us doin comedy together and my life long dream was to see hi in person but i see that is not going to happen anyway he will be missed one of the kings of comedy is gone now there are more that need to step up for him i never thought he would die so early and it came as a shock to me we will miss u Bernie

I just hold the most wonderful laughter filled moment when he got to the "other side" you know folks are laughing like never before, when he enetered Bernie had a whole lot to say and you can know for certain it was hilarious!!!

This man was a great man!!!! He knew what to say when to say it. I seen all his movies and love everyone of them. He was a role model for us as kids and now as parents. It's a shame the way things happens but there is one thing to be proud of for his family and that is knowing that your husband or father changed people lives and made them for the better and for the family to know this that the world wont be the same now that we lost BERNIE MAC!! My heart goes to his family and friends who knew him as a person and to know there will never be another great and funny man like him.

Bernie Mac you will be greatly missed. Although he was not my Uncle Berine he felt like me and my childrens Uncle Bernie, he was like family in my home. Me and my kids sat down everyday and watch his shows. I told my kids he passed away and right then and there they knew who he was and their only 5 and 6 yrs old. My prayers goes out to his family and friends, remember to keep God first and he will help you all through your hard times. May you RIP Bernie Mac with much love.
