Born on August 24, 1976 in Canberra, Australia, Alex O'Loughlin split his childhood between his divorced parents' homes in Sydney and Canberra before graduating from Sydney's National Institute of Dramatic Art in 2002.
While the actor's first industry break was in the 2004 flick Oyster Farmer, O'Loughlin's career took off when he was cast as vampire private investigator Mick St. John on TV's Moonlight.
O'Loughlin reportedly screen tested for the role of James Bond in attempt to further his film career, but lost out to Daniel Craig. Instead, he landed small roles in various Hollywood flicks like one-half of the kissing couple in the opening scene of The Holiday and as Jonathan Rhys Meyers' brother in August Rush.
Most recently the actor appeared as Stan, Jennifer Lopez's love interest in the 2010 romantic comedy The Back-Up Plan. This fall, O'Loughlin will headline CBS' remake of Hawaii Five-0 as Det. Steve McGarrett, opposite Scott Caan and Taryn Manning.
The actor, who split from longtime girlfriend, Australian singer/actress Holly Valance in 2009, has a son, Saxon, from a previous relationship.
