Dakota Fanning began acting at the early age of five, appearing in Tide commercials and guest-starring in NBC's ER.
In 2001, Fanning played a daughter of a mentally challenged man, played by Sean Penn, in the film I Am Sam. Her critically-acclaimed role earned her a Best Young Actor/Actress award from the Broadcast Film Critics Association and a nomination for a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Fanning has been cast in lead roles alongside Brittany Murphy in Uptown Girls and as Sally in The Cat in the Hat. She has also starred alongside Kurt Russell in Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story, Tom Cruise in War of the Worlds and had the leading role of Charlotte in Charlotte's Web.
In 2006, Fanning was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, making her the youngest member in the Academy history. She went on to film a movie adaptation of The Secret Life of Bees in 2008, followed by her role in the Twilight Saga: New Moon and Eclipse.
Fanning recently finished filming The Runaways, where she played the lead role of Cherie Currie.
