Born in 1964 in Africa and raised in France, model/actor Djimon Hounsou was discovered by a fashion designer while living on the Parisian streets. His unexpected modeling career led to a critically acclaimed acting career.
After debuting in the film Without You I'm Nothing in 1990, Hounsou received laud for his performance in 1997's Amistad, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe. He went on to work in hit films including 2000's Gladiator and 2002's In America.
Off-screen, Hounsou continues to model and his fit-and-toned body can be seen in Calvin Klein underwear ads.
The actor and former girlfriend Kimora Lee Simmons welcomed their first child together, a son, in June 2009. The couple split three years after thier son Kenzo's birth.
