Jessica Simpson’s Colorist Rita Hazan Dishes on Why the Star Needed an Edgy Hair Update

Even devoted blondes need a change from time to time!

When Jessica Simpson revealed via Instagram that she brightened her flaxen tresses on Monday, Dec. 1, we immediately fell in love—and then just as quickly attempted to put a name to the precise shade of white-blonde the fashion empress chose.

Well, we wonder no more! Enter Rita Hazan, Simpson's longtime colorist and friend, who exclusively chatted with Us Weekly to discuss everything about the mom of two's brilliant new hue—including why it was necessary.

"Now that she cut her hair, she needed a cool and edgy color," Hazan said, referencing the bold lob haircut Simpson, 34, received on Oct. 25. The dye process took two hours in the chair, but soon enough, the duo had the final, shining result.

"I made it a cool champagne blonde—very light, almost white, but with depth and dimension. She's a towhead!" Hazan, who also works with Jennifer Lopez and Meghan Trainor, shared. And when all was said and done, what did Simpson think of her platinum shade? "[She's] obsessed," said Hazan.

For those of you out there looking to get Simpson's unique shade of "champagne blonde," Hazan emphasized that it's all about the upkeep. Once you go bright, make sure to take a trip to the salon for touch-ups—or, as Simpson says, a "Monday bleach out"—every six to eight weeks.

And keep the love up at home, too! Hazan said that frequent conditioning is a top priority to maintain the bright color, citing the Rita Hazan Weekly Remedy and Breaking Brass Gloss as two products Simpson loves to use on her own locks.
