#KylieJennerChallenge Takes Off, Social Media Users Go to Risky Measures for Plumped Lips

Kylie Jenner shows off her lips on Instagram.
Kylie Jenner's lips have inspired a challenge on social media to achieve her plump pout.

One question: Why?

Another trend has taken hold of the social media world — and it has nothing do to with the color of a dress. This time around people are taking to their Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook accounts to join the #KylieJennerChallenge in quest of a full pout.

Kylie Jenner's lips have been the constant topic of discussion for months with questions of whether or not the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star's puckers are the result of fillers. The youngest member of the Kardashian-Jenner family (who has yet to comment publicly on the challenge) has slammed rumors that she has had any cosmetic work done, crediting her look to simple makeup tricks — such as over-lining her lips with a lip pencil.

"You guys have watched me grow up since I was 9. My face is going to get different," she told Cosmopolitan in its February 2015 issue. "Now, I know how to do my makeup, contour and everything."

So how exactly are they blowing up their lips to more than three-times their size? By sucking air through a small cup (like a shot glass) to make their lips swollen, and thus, appear larger. Unfortunately, the challenge has not been without its repercussions. Some participants have experienced cuts, bruising, and hours of painful swelling.

"I screwed up #kyliejennerchallenge #uhoh," Twitter user @_zoeymcguire wrote, sporting huge lips complete with a bruise that extended all the way down to her chin.

Another teenage challenger tried out the look with less than optimal results. "@sorryimalex #kyliejennerlips #kyliejennerchallenge I look like flappy bird," Twitter user @JessxCeee wrote

While the challenge has been driven mostly by teenagers and young adults, an image of a pre-school-age girl popped up under the hashtag.

Out of the throngs of people who jumped at the opportunity to join in, there were some who slammed the popular hashtag. "People lips out here looking like this because of this #KylieJennerchallenge,” one Twitter user wrote in the caption of a picture of a baboon's backside.
