Lip service, indeed! Lupita Nyong’o celebrated the opening night of Eclipsed (and her Broadway debut!) on Sunday, March 6, in NYC. Naturally, such a special occasion calls for a bold statement — like a blood-orange lip.

As it turns out, it’s a shade that hits close to the heart. “We went with a bold flaming lip color, similar to African tulips I saw in Kenya last summer,” celebrity makeup artist Nick Barose said, referencing the trip he made with Nyong’o, 33, to the country she was raised in. “To complement her beautiful forest-green Balmain dress, I wanted the makeup to be fresh, colorful and draw inspiration from nature.”

For the “orange African tuliptree” shade, Barose mixed three products. He first applied Lancôme Rouge in Love Lipcolor in 146B Miss Coquelicot. He then added the soon-to-be-released Lancôme Juicy Shaker Pigment-Infused Bi-Phase Lip Oil in 154 Great Fruit for shine. And for a final touch of polish, he lined her lip line with Lancôme Le Lipstique in Sheer Chocolate.

As for that stunning sapphire eyeliner, Barose, who also works with Tessa Thompson, used Lancôme Drama Liqui-Pencil Extreme Longwear Eyeliner in Cote D’azur.
