Talk about a restrictive diet.

Amanda Seyfried admits in the April issue of Esquire that she's going to extremes to stay thin by only eating raw food.

"It's intense. And sort of awful," says the actress, 24 (who plays a call girl in her next flick, Chloe, in theaters March 26). "Yesterday for lunch? Spinach. Just spinach. Spinach and some seeds."

Esquire notes that she "scrunches her nose" when lamenting about the seeds.

For the interview, the actress -- who appears in the mag photographed in skimpy lingerie -- brings her own tabbouleh salad in a plastic container to a "deserted bar" that doesn't serve lunch so she can avoid temptation.

She says she's under a lot of pressure to be pin thin.

"If I didn't run and work out, there's no way I would be this thin," she recently told Glamour magazine. "But I have to stay in shape because I'm an actress. It's f----d up and it's twisted, but I wouldn't get the roles otherwise. If I'd been a bit bigger, I don't think they would have cast me for Mamma Mia!"

The stress has taken its toll. While talking to Esquire, Seyfried pops half a Lexapro pill (which treats anxiety) -- and a birth control pill (she's currently dating Dominic Cooper).

"Yeah, yeah, I'm anxious," she says. "And yes, I use birth control."

As someone who eats mostly raw vegetables and fruits (about 85% of my diet) and am completely healthy, I think it's sad that this magazine and this actress put out the "raw food diet" like this. The fact is, the girl has food issues, not surprising considering being a young actress, and can use this "diet" as a way to avoid actually eating. This whole thing screams for attention.

why would she need to take her Lexapro and birth control during the interview? She couldn't excuse herself to the restroom or something? Weird.

Amanda, if you cringe at the thought of eating, it means your on a bad diet. eating shouldnt make you want to cringe. eating should make you happy and fill you up. If stars are using diets like that, no wonder so many girls are obsessing over there weight and starving themselfs.

Lexapro is for depression and is not FDA approved for anxiety.

pathetic, if she really focuses on her looks more than her actual acting skill, that just shows how much she cares about the industry. when will people realize eating less acting slows down your metabolism, making you unhealthier. and diets don't work, being healthy is a way of life. if you know how to make good eating habits you can incorporate that into your everyday life and then you don't have to worry about gaining wait. what is she working towards? going from size 2 to 0? what a role model for young girls...

ZOMG!! Celebs have got to realise minimising caloric intake to that extent will slow down there metabolic rate, and so when they eat proper food the gain weight like that!! Just eat in moderation and healthy, do exercise to tone up and burn fat etc and they'll be fine!

@Suie = not everyone is naturally thin so to make a blanket statement that at 24 you should be naturally skinny is moronic. I appalud her for being honest and like TX said, I'm so sick of hearing celebs blabbing on and on about how they are naturally skinny - when in reality, probably less than 1% are naturally this way - the rest are on the "Rachel Zoe" plan - eating grapefruit, veggies, coffee and running a bizillion miles a day. The problem is that as these actresses age, the starvation lifestyle starts to show in a big way - just look at the cast of Desperate Housewives as an example - Eva Longoria is the only one who looks healthy and attractive, the rest look like scarecrows. And this is b/c she is one of the lucky few who is naturally petite - and while she has to live a healthy lifestyle to maintain it, she doesn't have to starve and work out like a manaic. The obsession over being as thin as possible is pretty warped - especially considering that women do it for themselves. Men don't like that super skinny - it's women who aspire to those extremes.

I could see if she were 34 but when you are 24 you shouldn't have to starve yourself to be thin

  • March 17, 2010 - 7:24pm reality

Ok so now we know she's getting screwed, depressed and starving. Too much info. Gee thanks.

i believe lexapro is an antidepressant as well. why throw that in. how stupid!

  • March 17, 2010 - 2:48pm sue

Well if she ate more than spinach this magazine would call her fat. It is a shame that actresses aren't strong enough to stand up to editors of magazines, and dress designers. How does it make the editors feel to know that they push these people to drugs?

  • March 17, 2010 - 2:24pm Cherie

I'm a raw foodist and eat about 3,000 calories per day (female). It's not the raw-food diet that is the issue; it's her starvation issues/eating disorder. Maybe she should try eating some fresh, ripe fruit.

Why can't Dominic Cooper just wear condoms? What about femidoms?

  • March 17, 2010 - 12:23pm TX GAL

love this gal! i think she's a great actress and at least she still looks healthy! i hate dieting too...but i will say, thank God someone is FINALLY honest about how they have to fight to stay skinny! if i have to read another article about some actress who is 'naturally skinny'...'it's genetics'...or 'i eat anything i want, i just have a fast metabolism'...I WILL PUKE! so thank you Amanda Seyfried for keeping it real!

  • March 17, 2010 - 12:06pm kate

She said she had spinach for lunch not that she only eats spinach! US Weekly needs to have better taglines and people need to read the story! I think this is great that she says she has to eat crazy healthy and exercise. I don't really care for her but at least she's honest and being skinny the honest way.

I applaud her for being REAL, and telling the truth about hollywood. Why should she hide in the bathroom (closet), like so many young girl's with weight issues that turn into eating disorders. She's not in trouble yet, but this obsession could lead to trouble, hence the medication.

  • March 17, 2010 - 11:02am anonymouse

Sad, isn't it. Admitting to eating almost nothing just so she can be acceptable in Hollywood. No wonder she's on meds. Seriously? Would you wish this for your daughters? No wonder young girls are so screwed up about body image.

  • March 17, 2010 - 10:49am Joy

It really, really saddens me that she is putting this out there. She may not like it, but she's a role model to teenage girls. Spinach only? Anti-anxiety meds? Its just a scary message. But hey, at least I can tell my daughter that this is not normal and Amanda herself has admitted this.

  • March 17, 2010 - 10:46am Val

Who is this chick? She should eat her dress it looks like spinach.

  • March 17, 2010 - 10:38am my2cents

I like Amanda Seyfried but I don't understand the point of taking her birth control and anxiety medication during an interview...she couldn't have excused herself and gone to the bathroom?
