It works for Girls — but will it work for The View? Jenny McCarthy and Sherri Shepherd took a cue from HBO star Lena Dunham and went topless on Tuesday, April 1, joking that they wanted to see whether they, too, could boost their ratings with a little nudity.

The two co-hosts started out the segment fully clothed, but after showing a brief clip from a recent episode of Girls — in which Dunham's character, Hannah, does some sexual role-playing with her boyfriend, Adam — they stripped off their shirts, leaving their bare chests covered by just two black boxes. Not surprisingly, the audience went wild.

"You know, Lena, she gets press every week for being naked," Shepherd, 46, joked of Dunham, 27, who is frequently nude on her HBO show. "We're jumping on the bandwagon."

"It's true," McCarthy, 41, piped in. "We want more ratings, too."

Shepherd then pretended to get upset, noting how much bigger her black box was compared with her co-host's. (McCarthy's covered just her breasts, while Shepherd's covered almost her entire torso.)

"Wait a minute. Look at my box. Why is my big black box so much bigger than yours?" she complained. "You got the cute little rectangle box. Mine, the whole family could [fit behind it]. I want your box!"

The segment ended with Shepherd still arguing the size of her box, as McCarthy quipped: "Take a little time to enjoy our view."
