Meghan King Edmonds is in mourning. Five days after the death of her husband Jim Edmonds‘ ex-wife, LeAnn Edmonds Horton, the Real Housewives of Orange County star is honoring her friend in a very public, very personal way. In a Monday, July 27, interview with HuffPost Live, the reality star showed off her freshly dyed pink hair, which she colored with stylist Julius Michael after Hortons sudden passing from colon cancer.

“I just think that life is short. My stepdaughters just lost their mom a few days ago to cancer and she and I were close friends. My whole attitude was ‘Life is short, and I want to celebrate her life. I’m going to do it because I can!'” Edmonds said on HuffPost Live. “It’s pink because . . . carpe diem.”

Edmonds told HuffPost Live that her family — including stepdaughters Hayley Edmonds, Sutton Edmonds, and Lauren Edmonds, and stepson Landon Edmonds — is mourning Horton in their own way. “There’s a lot of pain I have for my stepdaughters — they’re going to have to navigate life without their mom. We’re just picking up the pieces and going on with the life we now know,” Edmonds, who married former St. Louis Cardinals player Jim in 2014, said.

The reality star said Horton’s daughter Hayley — whom RHOC viewers saw getting ready for her high school formal with her mom on a recent episode — has taken things especially hard. “It’s been less than a week, and throughout the stages of grief, there’s a lot of anger and sadness. With Hayley and I, we talk all the time, but now it’s difficult — she just lost her mom.”

As Edmonds navigates her family’s new normal, the reality star confirmed she has Horton’s blessing to raise her daughters. “I’m not trying to replace anyone — I’m in the stepmom role, and I just have to figure out what that’s going to be,” the RHOC star said. “LeAnn and I were always in close contact about the girls. She loved me and she loved the role I played while she was alive, and she felt comfortable with me being in the girls’ lives moving forward.”
