Long known for his portly build, the former Roseanne star hit the red carpet at Thursday's AFI Tribute to Mike Nichols in L.A., showing off a dramatically slimmer physique.

The actor turns 58 later this month, and stars in HBO's new series Treme.
In a 1992 interview with Entertainment Weekly, he claimed to be indifferent about his weight, which was around 300 pounds at the time. ''I lose it, I gain it back,'' he said. ''No big deal.''

Oh wow he looks good, and this is no doubt great for his health. How did he do it, I wonder??
He weighed a great deal more than 300 pounds in the old picture - try 400. At least he has a chance of living longer now and that's a good thing.

This is ironic, since just the other night, they reran the old episode of Roseanne where Dan has a heart attack at Darlene's wedding, almost dies, and is supposed to change his diet & exercise but lies to everyone about it. I was just wondering what happened to John, and I was worried we would lose him just like John Candy, and Chris Farley, two other wonderful talented comic actors who are gone. I hope John Goodman continues on this path, is around for a long time to come. XOXO John!!!

John is such a sweet fellow or at least seems so to me. I have sometimes pondered the effect of his weight on his health, despite his (typical) denials about it. GLAD he has decided to be healthy and I hope this is a life change for him NOT JUST A DIET.
