Colbert, 50, interviewed the director (whom he’s previously referred to as his childhood idol) during an hour-long conversation about Star Wars and the upcoming J.J. Abrams-helmed reboot. While on the red carpet, Colbert gleefully put one arm around Lucas, 70, and pointed at the filmmaker with an excited expression.

During his chat last Friday, the beloved Star Wars director told the audience and Colbert that he has yet to see the brand-new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. "I only saw what was on CBS," Lucas noted during the panel (via Vulture). "I want [to wait] to see it on the big screen… The one thing I regretted about Star Wars was that I never got to see it."

Lucas then turned the tables and questioned Colbert. "The perfect choice to replace that Jon Stewart fellow would have been you," Lucas said to his interviewer.

Colbert, who will replace David Letterman as the host of CBS' Late Show come September, said the Comedy Central gig wasn't for him. "I don't want to be the guy to take over for Jon Stewart," he noted to Lucas. "I worked for Jon Stewart at that show, and my memories will always be of him being the keenest, most intelligent, most beautifully deconstructive mind. … And I would never, however successful I'd be, get out of his shadow."
