It was sunset in Florence, Italy last year when businessman Tom Vitale asked for Valerie Bertinelli's hand in marriage with a gorgeous ring from Tiffany's.

Sounds picture-perfect romantic, right?

Too bad Bertinelli had a serious case of the grumps!

"We had just had dinner," the Hot in Cleveland star, 50, says during a Wednesday appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

"It was a crappy dinner, which is really not okay in Italy."

To calm down, Bertinelli "went up to my room and was reading TIME magazine...Real romantic, aren't I?"

Bertinelli's reading time was interrupted by Vitale.

"So I'm reading the magazine and he's got this little glint in his eye and he's lying in the bed next to me," the star notes. "I'm like, 'Stop it. Leave me alone.' ...He's like, 'Really?' And I'm like 'Really. I just want to read this magazine. It was a crappy dinner. We're in Italy. It should've been an amazing dinner!'"

The One Day at a Time vet continues of the fairy-tale-gone-awry: "I was really pissed off...And then I just closed my eyes and he just puts this little box on my chest. It was from Tiffany's."

Did her foul mood change then? "I said, 'Why did you spend so much money? Why did you go to Tiffany's? You should've gone someplace else with cheaper jewelry.'"'

She and Vitale wed on New Year's Day in Malibu as 100 friends and family looked on.

"I don't know why he married me," Bertinelli tells Ellen DeGeneres with a laugh.

In all seriousness, though, the actress says she's never felt better -- and she turns 51 next month. "I swear to God, if I knew I would feel this good and my life would be this amazing at 50, I would've turned 50 a long time ago. I pinch myself that this is my life right now!"
