Alanis Morissette admitted her pregnancy -- which she confirmed first to Us Weekly -- was unplanned on Chelsea Lately Wednesday night.

"I thought I wasn't. In passing, I said I was a little late. The doctor said, 'Is that normal?' [I said], 'No, not really typical for me,'" says Morissette, 36, who wed rapper Mario "Souleye" Treadway, 30, last May.
After the doctor took a look, he said, "This looks like the screen of a pregnant lady. And I said, 'There's still a chance that I'm not though, yes?'" Morissette goes on. "And he said, 'Yeah, about the chance that I'm getting a sex change!'"

"I was happy," says Morissette, who is five months along. "I'm glowing!"
Morissette also reveals how she was introduced to her husband.
"We met at a meditation ceremony at my house. He walked in and I thought, 'Wow, he's incredibly sexy!' but I had no idea what was to come of our little connection," she says. "He's awesome."
She's currently writing a book, but it won't touch upon her contentious split from Dave Coulier, which inspired the lyrics to her hit "You Oughta Know."

"It's a very stream-of-consciousness book: philosophy, Q&A, not a memoir... I have no desire to rehash or tell the story of my story... ever!" she jokes.
Chelsea Handler also asks if Morissette supports legalizing marijuana.
"I enjoy it sometimes, but not while I'm pregnant, obviously!" says the singer.

Birth control is not 100% effective...you CAN get pregnant while on the pill, IUD, Nuvaring, etc etc etc. Trust me: I'm 17 weeks pregnant...and it WAS a compelte suprise. We were NOT planning it. I've been on the Pill since I was 15. I am 31 now. I tookit at the same time everyday. I haven't switched brands in 5 years. SUPRISES DO HAPPEN. (and for the record, once we got over the shock, we are both thrilled beyond words...everything happens for a reason!)

the pill isn't perfectly affective and when a woman switches between brands or from oral to shot or vaginal ring while she's adjusting to the new form she can conceive without knowing it and at Alanis's age it's more likely to be a surprise as fertility drops of majorly after age 30 and the likely hood of birth defects premature birth and loss go up dramatically
i thought her story didn't really make a lot of sense, i think they were trying - maybe she got preg right before they were married and she didn't want people to know? most women don't run to the doctor when they are a little late. it's called a home preg test

Did I miss the part in the article where it says she wasn't on birth control or that he didn't wear a condom? Birth Control is not 100% effective...but it's nice to see how all the other posters assume she wasn't using protection.

Where does it say that she wasn't using birth control? You can get pregnant while on/using birth control. Basic biology. Relax people!

if you're not on birth control, its planned. also, she should have been taking prenatals in case. people are so dumb.
It always amazes me how someone can say they are surprised they are pregnant. What you did have a clue that you were using not birth control. Are you stupid?!
It's not an accident or a surprise if you are not using birth control!
