Miranda Kerr: "I Thought I Was Going to Die" Giving Birth

A lot has changed since Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom welcomed son Flynn in January. "I was working 18-hour days. Now the pace has slowed so I can spend the majority of my time with Flynn," Kerr, 28, tells InStyle Australia. "We have a bath together every night. I am first a wife and a mother. When I work, it needs to be the best decision for us as a family."

Though she made headlines for her slender post-baby body, the new mom insists she wasn't pressured to get back into shape. "Flynn is a big baby. . .and I thought to myself, 'I have so much more that I want to do aside from modeling," the Victoria's Secret supermodel says. "I can live with my body not being in shape if I have a healthy son. It's worth it.'"

In the interview, Kerr also opens up about the pains of natural childbirth. "I actually thought I was going to die at one point and left my body," she says. "I was looking down on myself, the pain was so intense."
"I kept thinking, 'How do women do this?'" Kerr recalls. "But if other women have done this, I can do it too. I was determined."
Now that she's gotten into the groove of motherhood, Kerr even hints that she and her family may relocate to her native Australia. "Flynn would love it, and I had such a wonderful childhood in the country," she says. "He is going to have a diverse upbringing."
The model also graces the cover of Japan's Love Celeb magazine, where she admits that "Flynn's birth is the best thing that has happened to me. He is the light that illuminates my life." Kerr is quick to point out that, "of course, Orlando is also the light. I love both of them very much."

31there are bad side effects from epidural so it's understandable if miranda chose not to use it. To call an experience of giving birth "uncomfortable" is just stupid. It's like pushing a watermelon out of your vagina!
Oh having a baby does hurt and the wegiht of the baby does count, period. I never thought I was goint to die but sure it wasn't a ride at the park either. Every woman is different and every pregnancy/delivery even for the same woman is different as well. I wish mu tummy has gotten that flat at all, let alone that fast. It's also her first kid so things get back in shape quicker than with the second right? I bet she went back to exercising like crazy after having her baby, who by the way, looks a lot like his dad!
I dont usually comment on these types of things but I honestly cant believe how rude some of you are being!!Calling her a drama queen, calling her baby odd looking.. etc etc!! She has every right to be honest about her childbirth experience...I felt like i was dying myself when I had my son(18hrs,natural) and he was in the lower weight range!!! You people have no right to judge her for sharing her experience, dont read it if you dont want to hear it!Oh and keep the nasty comments about her son to yourselves!!He's just a baby, theres no need for it!
I'm shocked that TINY little body pushed out that HUGE baby Flynn was a biggin. And Miranda has the body of a 12 year old girl.
@Nicole Davis, for you to criticize Miranda for her own experience is stupid. Good for you for having a a perfect childbirth. Not everyone is that lucky.
Oh please, there's been at least three other celebrity mothers give birth since you Miranda, give them the limelight now.
Oh Jeez, Maree, I guess you deserve the medal. And Shannon, Im not hand holding teenage moms to be, being that Im a woman in my thirties who had her first child at 29, I was far from being a child with my first child birth. I had a 26 hour labor, and sure, my child was only 7 pounds, but my contractions slowed to the point where they stopped almost, and my baby was stuck in my canal for awhile and after she came out, her amniotic fluid was green cause she had gone bathroom during the labor. Every labor is different, and perhaps her out of body experience is from being light headed from not eating near enough so she could whip back into shape a week after her birth.
@ Jesse, you seem to be a bit presumptuous, both about my intelligence and about my parental status! I'll refrain from insulting you personally, but during a pregnancy women generally gain between 30-40 lbs (unless you think you're smarter than the obstetrician). The point is, like many new mom's I know today, Kerr looks like she got her pre-baby body back fast, and to suggest that she isn't preoccupied with her physique when she looks this way doesn't make her comment ring true. Try to think before you accuse someone else of having a low IQ, because that would make you...well, I assume you're "smart" enough to figure that one out ; )
@Nicole: Honestly, to what moms are you trying to hand hold, the teeny boppers who in no way should be pregnant anyway? As an actual grown-up pregnant person, I wanted honesty about the birthing process so there wouldn't be any surprises. I borrowed one of those earth mother books where everyone is naked and how the natural birthing process can be so peaceful and you can even have an orgasm! How is that preparing a mom-to-be? Yes, she could be that one in a million gal who gently pushes out baby after 3 hours of "slightly uncomfortable" period-like cramps, but most women will not have that experience. I think it is fine for women to tell their story the way it happened and it's ok if the experience was a breeze or if it was excrutiating. No one should come on here and say "oh please, birthing a baby is a mere discomfort, definitely not excrutiating." Sorry Kim, but it was the worst pain I have ever felt and I broke my leg once while severely spraining the other ankle. That felt uncomfortable compared to my second kid's birth.
Well good for you Nicole, don't you deserve a medal then! What this article failed to mention is she had close to a 30 hour labour. Every birthing experience is different, and everyones' pain threshold is different. I was in labour for 13 hours and it was excrutiating and I actually nearly died. I had massive complications and lost 40% of my blood and needed 6 blood transfusions that saved my life, and that was just one of many complicatiosn that I had. As someone who nearly did die giving birth I am not at all offended by Miranda's comments and applaud her for being honest because it is not a walk in the park for a lot of women. She's not being a 'drama queen' she's being honest about a natural birth, a 30 hour labour and a big baby!!
I had 5 natural childbirth so yes it did hurt. For someone to say that its'"uncomfortable" is insane. I did have out out body experience with my first child and I really thought that I was going to die but the other deliveries were different so I guess it differs everytime. She should be allowed to described her experience without being judged.
Abby- the baby looks odd? That baby is beautiful!! I'd like to see #1 what you look like and #2 what your idea of a cute baby is. You're odd, dear.
Giving birth is painfuk but I think Miranda is a little bit of a drama queen. I have two kids, one of which was 8lbs 9 oz and she was also a week early and yes it was very uncomfortable but definitely not excrutiating.
Brittany, some moms think that having a baby takes some sort of special talent.
Miranda is so tiny and that baby was almost 10 lbs so I could imagine some pain for sure...! She is allowed to talk about it freely ... don't know why all you moms are getting so upset.
Are you serious Courtney?? Do you have any children yourself?? 9.12 is a huge baby!! Especially for someone as tiny as she is!! Take your own advice and stick to what you obviously are most known for: your stupidity.
I've never had kids, so I'll refrain from commenting on her statement about the pain during childbirth. But I do want to say how adorable that baby is. He looks happy, and healthy, and he is obviously very much loved by his parents. That's all that matters to me.
Oh shut up Miranda 9lbs 12oz isn't a huge baby it's just above the recomended Healthy weight range for a full term singleton birth which is between 6lbs and 9lbs 8oz though the average newborn is usually around 7lbs 7oz. You're a model stick to that most models have very little for brains
They baby looks a bit odd. Cute but odd.
Yeah as a grown woman I think you are smart enough to becareful how you choose your words in the future, because you obviously offended people. Thats all.
