Nia Long: Pregnancy Caught Me By Surprise

Fans weren't the only ones surprised to learn that Nia Long is expecting her second child. At Sunday's BET Awards in L.A., the 40-year-old actress revealed that her current pregnancy was actually unplanned.

"I was supposed to go to Ghana to do a film and that's when I found out I was pregnant," Long told reporters. "I had a doctor's appointment to get the yellow fever shot and they were like, 'Miss Long, we can't give you a shot.'"

Once doctors informed Long that she was expecting, "I almost fainted. It was the best moment and the sweetest surprise ever."

(This will be the actress' first child with professional basketball player Ime Udoka, 33; she has a 10-year-old son, Massai Jr., with ex-boyfriend Massai Z. Dorsey.)

Now that she's eating for two, Long has developed some new food preferences. "I'm craving salt like crazy," she told Us Weekly. "I'm usually more of a chocolate girl, but I haven't been craving sweets."

Currently five months along and "feeling great," the actress admitted that her first trimester wasn't exactly the easiest.

"I was so horribly sick for four and a half months," Long told Us. "Now I have energy, besides a little heartburn here and there, and I'm doing excellent. The baby is huge!"

I guess being told by everybody that chances of being pregnant after a certain age is next to impossible, I can't blame her for being surprised...one never expects it to be them until it happens...

That does happen to people even if they don't use protection. All the signs and symptoms vary from woman to woman. I have an auntie who was pregnant and didn't know it until she was 8 months along because she got her "friend" every month. Everybody's different.

Ms Long is a fool if she wasn't expecting to be pregnant at her age it's common and has gone on for decades names like Audrey Hepburn & Gena Rowlands ring any bells both had their youngest child after age 40 in 1970
