Sarah Michelle Gellar‘s secret ingredient is love! If you follow the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star on Instagram, you already know that she’s a wiz in the kitchen. She often posts photos of the kid-friendly culinary creations she whips up for daughter Charlotte, 5, and son Rocky, 3, from morning “waffle flowers” to chocolate-covered marshmallows to pieces of fruit cut into letters to spell out notes.

The actress, 38, even co-founded a new food crafting service, Foodstirs, with two friends. The company offers little kits, complete with ingredients and instructions, for creating things like Brownie Popsicles and Cupcake Cones with your kids. Gellar has been cooking with her own kids for years — she told Yahoo Parenting it helps them stay connected as a family.

“We all live in such a tech-heavy world, and it’s important to take it back to a simple time,” the Crazy Ones alum explained to the site in a new interview. “Cooking and eating is the one time to connect with your family. Life slows down and it’s about the people.”

She went on to note the importance of food in social interactions, from first dates to holidays. “Making food is a jumping-off point to connect, and I can get my kids involved,” the mom of two shared. “I’ve always had my kids in the kitchen — I’ll tell Charlotte, ‘I need three cups of this’ and she’ll pour and dump, and when my son was younger he would point to the numbers.”

Her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., gets in on the action, too. “Baking is about quality time, and it’s a lot easier to motivate kids to make cupcakes than chicken. It requires patience, time, and it’s about making memories,” Gellar told Yahoo.

Of course, different activities work for different families — and the same goes for parenting techniques. Asked the best and worst advice she’d ever gotten about motherhood, the Cruel Intentions star replied, “I don’t believe in ‘best’ and ‘worst.’ Someone can give you any type of advice, and it’s up to you how you utilize it.”
