Baby on board! Tika Sumpter announced that she’s pregnant with her first child, a baby girl, while promoting her new film, Southside With You, on Friday, August 12.
“Preggers and promoting w Legend. Happy and proud,” she captioned an Instagram photo of herself with the film’s executive producer, singer John Legend.
Sumpter, 36, later revealed her baby bump to her 631,000 Instagram followers with a shot of herself in a stylish dress at the event, writing, “Grateful. Happy. Complete.”
The Haves and the Have Nots star portrays a young Michelle Obama in Southside With You, a new romantic drama based on the former Chicago lawyer’s first date in 1989 with future husband and President of the United States Barack Obama.
At the star-studded affair on Friday, Sumpter told Entertainment Tonight that she’s excited for her daughter to one day see her mother portray a powerful woman like the first lady.
“I just feel like the world has shifted so much. I feel like we’re in the forefront right now and we’re so in control of our destiny,” the TV personality told the news outlet. “This [film] is like a gift to my daughter. You can really do anything you want to do and be great at it. … I put so much work into it. I just hope [Michelle] likes it.”
As for her pregnancy? “It really has been so easy, you know, and fun,” Sumpter told ET.
Southside With You hits theaters August 26.
