ABC’s Sam Champion Leaves Good Morning America And Heads to The Weather Channel

Sam Champion is leaving Good Morning America for The Weather Channel.

After 25 years reporting the weather for ABC, Sam Champion is packing up his barometer and heading over to The Weather Channel. The 52-year-old weatherman has officially announced he's leaving ABC and Good Morning America to be a host and managing editor at The Weather Channel.

Champion started working for ABC in 1988 at WABC and joined the cast of GMA in 2006. He was a central part of the reporting on Superstorm Sandy last year, which earned ABC a Peabody Award for its coverage.  

ABC News President Ben Sherwood released a statement on Champion's departure on Monday, Dec. 2.

"GMA will celebrate Sam’s last day on Wednesday’s program," he said. "While he is leaving ABC News, he will always be a part of our family."

There are no plans to replace Champion on GMA, and Sherwood says the network is "in excellent hands" with his weather-loving partner Ginger Zee, who will take on Champion's responsibilities.

In addition to his career successes, Champion's had a banner year in his personal life as well. The openly gay weatherman married longtime boyfriend Rubem Robierb in late December 2012, and GMA pals Robin Roberts, Lara Spencer, and Josh Elliott attended.
