Amber Portwood Responds to Gary Shirley’s Bombshell After the Explosive ‘Teen Mom OG’ Episode

Things got particularly tense between exes Amber Portwood and Gary Shirley during the Monday, February 1, episode of Teen Mom OG. A smug Shirley, 29, presented his baby mama with paperwork on camera alleging that her fiancé, Matt Baier, had a handful of secret children.

The revelation ended in an explosive shouting match between the two, followed by Portwood’s private fight with Baier in their home. After the previously taped episode aired, Portwood, 25, and Baier sat down for a video interview with MTV to give fans an update on what happened behind the scenes and how they are today.

“Gary had told me a couple weeks after that he actually had known for a while, which just tells me that he just literally waited for the cameras to be there,” Portwood said of her ex. “I think what his main goal was, was to humiliate us and to try to make our family look like it’s not stable because this was when we were in the big custody battle with Leah.”

Shirley claimed that Baier had seven children, when Portwood said on camera that he only had two.

“It’s not accurate,” she explained. “He does only have five kids. Yes, I did know about them, but the other ones are older with families, and it wasn’t something that we wanted out.”

Portwood went on to defend her fiancé, who is 19 years her senior, opening up about his troublesome past as a fellow addict.

“His past was horrible. He wasn’t a good person back then,” she said with Baier sitting next to her. “He was a womanizing user. He was an addict, and that’s not an excuse, but that’s the type of person he was … We went through a rough patch because of this, because I had no trust in him anymore. We had to rebuild our trust again in our relationship.”

The soft-spoken Baier also discussed Shirley, who has not responded on social media since the episode aired.

“Gary’s not a part of our family. We don’t open up and tell him everything that’s going on in our lives because, frankly, it’s none of his business,” Baier said. “When this happened, I had to deal with Amber having doubts, regardless of whether it was true or not — I also had to deal with people saying ‘Oh, you abandoned your kids.’”

The Boston native wasn’t upset about the blow to his own reputation, but rather to those of his kids.

“That doesn’t hurt me. That hurts my kids,” he said. “I have no shame at all about my older kids, none whatsoever. I love my older kids, but they were born in a time when I wasn’t capable of taking care of them myself.“

The couple, who plan to get married this October, are moving forward with their relationship and using this setback as a way to grow together.

“If you look at both of us now as compared to then — the people — they’re not even similar people,” Baier added. “And I think who we really are has finally come out once we’ve cleaned up.”

While live-tweeting the episode, Portwood had some choice words for her ex and his current girlfriend, Kristina.

“Honestly I never try to stoop this low because I like to stay positive however I’m done with Gary and Kristina bashing me,” she tweeted. “I’ve grown too much to still be dealing with this negativity. Every time they say something negative they better be prepared for what I will reveal. I’m done being the bigger person…I’m done.”

Teen Mom OG airs on MTV on Mondays at 10 p.m. EST.
