Now that American Idol has finished, Phillip Phillips can finally let the healing begin.

The show's Season 11 winner -- who beat Jessica Sanchez during the dramatic May 23 finale -- headed into surgery Thursday morning to address serious kidney issues he had chosen to ignore until the program's conclusion.

"Surgery went well," an American Idol rep tells Us Weekly of Phillips' procedure, adding that he is now focused on "resting."

In March, TMZ reported that the Georgia-born crooner, 21, was rushed to the hospital for severe abdominal pain -- after having already gone through five kidney stone removal procedures since October 2011.

After finally getting the care he needs, the reality show's rep is confident Phillips will be back in fighting shape for his next big project: the American Idol tour.

Confirms the rep, "He'll be ready for the . . . kick-off on July 6!"
