After the couple went missing on Sunday, March 15, Buncombe County deputies later confirmed that neighbor Robert Jason Owens had been charged with two counts of first degree murder, one count of murder of an unborn child, breaking and entering, and larceny. Owens is said to have broken into the Codds' home and stolen a laptop, jewelry, and a handgun.

Owens had been hired by the couple to do work on their home and authorities believe he killed them on Thursday, and then broke into their home on Sunday, when he stole the items.
