As shocking as it was, Sunday's death of Brittany Murphy at age 32 didn't come out of nowhere -- not to those close to the actress, whose behavior of late was alarmingly erratic, according to new reports.

Just two weeks ago, Murphy was mysteriously fired from the horror film The Caller and reportedly replaced by Twilight's Rachelle LeFevre. (Murphy's rep has denied that she was fired.) Prior to that, Murphy barely kept her job shooting another horror film, Something Wicked, in Oregon. Production sources told TheWrap that Murphy was "barely there...she'd go in and out of consciousness in the middle of takes." This eventually forced the film's producers to rewrite scenes involving Murphy; most of the cast and crew "presumed she used prescription drugs," TheWrap reports.

Gone too soon: remember the stars Hollywood has lost

"Brittany's been living life on the edge," a friend of Murphy's is quoted as saying in British newspaper the Daily Mail. "She definitely had a drug problem and we have begged her to seek help.'"

Back in 2005, Murphy publicly denied rumors of cocaine use, saying, "Just for the record I have never tried it in my entire life, I've never even seen it, and I don't leave the house too much, except to go to work."

She added at the time, "My worst vice is caffeine. The rumor is really pretty darn far-fetched."

Director Amy Heckerling knew a very different Brittany Murphy when she worked with her on 1995's Clueless, Murphy's breakout role. Back then, Heckerling worried that the actress, then a young teenager, was already feeling the pressures of Hollywood stardom.

"She seemed to go through a change on Clueless," Heckerling told the blog And the Winner Is... Sunday. "Maybe she felt like she was not the, like, skinny, pretty girl, you know? And then the next few movies she was, you know, thinner, blonde ... and going out with Ashton Kutcher suddenly got more into that whole glamorous scene. I think she felt the pressure to become a different sort of commodity to survive in show business, and I think it was awful."

My heart cries out to beautiful young women suffering everywhere. Join me in blaming those truly responsible by picketing the International Cocaine Building in downtown St. Louis tomorrow, promptly at noon.

According to New York Post friends are now saying she was a known junkie. 32yr olds just dont drop from heart attacks and if she were type 2, she wouldn't be thin.

  • December 21, 2009 - 8:57pm chris

She was so good in 8 Mile. As a juvenile diabetic for 38 years I have a hard time believing she was a type 2. If your sugars are high, you can loose weight, go into ketoacidosis, vomit and have a heart attack from loss of electrolytes. Many young women and teen diabetics stay thin by not giving their proper doses of insulin. Scary practice.

  • December 21, 2009 - 8:33pm Not suprised

Sad. How many young, talented actresses would give their right arm to be working in films and this girl just pissed it all away. I don't understand tis level of self destruction.

I would put the odds, objectively, at 8-1 that foul play, e.g. drugs, was involved in Ms. Murphy's death. Inexplicable for her to die at that age otherwise. Sad, but certainly far from the last Hollywood starlet to die young.

What's funny is people on her are bashing people mag but hey u had to click on the story and read it. That's their job to get stories whether true or false from people who knew her and are willing to give them a story. People mag is a gossip magazine if u don't like it then don't read it, and def don't click on a story that says Murphy in and out of conscience. I hope that it's not true she died from drugs, actually i wish she wasn't dead at all but a young woman died at 32 and it seems that the only reason people can think of is she had flu like symtoms so of course its gonna look drug related.

  • December 21, 2009 - 7:49pm Jen

If she was in and out of consciousness then of course she was on drugs(sarcasm). She had type 2 diabetes for which she took medication. Regardless of how she died, a young and talented lady lost her life; show some respect! She could have had an underlying condition that nobody knew about. Wait until the autopsy is released, then make your decison

Consider the source of all of this. Hidden sources, probably from those who worked with on the set that didn't get along with her. She cannot even defend herself! If she was clean, what is US MAG going to say then? I'd bet they won't say a thing.

  • December 21, 2009 - 6:58pm JLS

SO ! This is what we are all going to do. Take every whack job's thoughts on her and put it in a trashy story.. SICK. IS US MAG and others every going to be respectful and wait until the facts are in? Apparently not.

  • December 21, 2009 - 6:42pm CMJ

I wonder if it was anerexia rather than drugs.

  • December 21, 2009 - 6:18pm wow

you guys are sick...this young woman has just died and you are blaming plastic surgery? that is so wrong...no matter what happened, a young actress lost her life..do you really think her family needs to hear/see rediculous rumors about to make the pain worse?

  • December 21, 2009 - 6:17pm Jon

    This situation is just sad!

  • December 21, 2009 - 6:09pm so sorry to hear it

It's sad to hear of the passing of a young person. I'm sorry to sound so morbid, but I bet Tiger is thankful for this.

  • December 21, 2009 - 5:18pm MY2CENTS

THE REAL TRUTH WILL COME IN A MATTER OF SEVERAL WEEKS WHEN THE TOXICOGY REPORT IS RELEASED BY THE CORORNER. SO THE TABLOIDS SHOULD STOP SPECULATING ABOUT HER DEATH. RIP BRITTANY, YOUR IN A BETTER PLACE :)

  • December 21, 2009 - 5:03pm cha

Hmm... Well if she was taking prescription drugs at the same time as caffeine, that might've been a bad mix right? What a loss to the hollywood industry.

It is so irresponsible of these websites to publish this kind of stuff without verifying the information. Sometimes a person's behavior can be very bizarre before they are diagnosed and receiving the proper treatment. The poor girl is dead. May she rest in peace.
