Facing reality. Caitlyn Jenner is nervously awaiting her fate following her involvement in a fatal car crash back in February. The former Olympian discussed the tragedy during a recent interview with the Today show’s Matt Lauer, which aired on Wednesday, Sept. 9.
As previously reported, the 65-year-old crashed her Cadillac Escalade into a Lexus, which caused a multi-car accident that killed driver Kim Howe. Last month, it was reported that the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department could charge Jenner with manslaughter. Howe’s stepchildren, Dana Redmond and William Howe, are also suing Jenner over the incident.
“I remember it happening [but] that’s about it,” Jenner told Lauer. “A tragedy like this, you’ll never get over it. You just learn to live with it the best you possibly can.”
She added: “I was under the speed limit. I was going 46 in a 50. My airbag didn’t even go off. All I probably needed was half a second of time. I almost stopped, but couldn’t quite get it stopped. I was pulling a trailer, so, no, I don’t think it was speed or anything like that.”
If indicted, Jenner could face up to a year in county jail — something that seems to terrify the transgender star. “The men’s county jail. It is an enormous problem that they would put trans women in a men’s county jail,” she explained. “That is the worst-case scenario.”
For now, Jenner is trying to focus on the positive. “People have been so nice and so accepting and understanding,” she told Lauer of her transition. “But I’ve also learned that that’s the exception and not the rule.”
Even so, Jenner doesn’t miss being a man. “I think about my life, and my life where I am right now, and what a tremendous experience this year [has been]. Hardly anyone gets to live two genders in their lives. Everyone wonders what’s it like to come from the other side. And here I have the opportunity to do that,” she said. “And to be honest with you, everything is so new and fun — from that standpoint it’s been great. There’s nothing better in life to wake up in the morning, look at yourself in the mirror, and feel comfortable with who you are.”
