So profoundly sad. YouTube's Bratayley family confirmed on Tuesday, Nov. 10, what exactly caused the death of 13-year-old Caleb Logan Bratayley in a post urging fans to celebrate life in his memory.
"The doctor confirmed today that Caleb passed away from a heart condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy that went undetected in his yearly checkups," the family wrote, alongside an Instagram pic of the grinning teen.
"Caleb didn't have any symptoms so the doctor said there was nothing we could have done differently. The girls' hearts were just recently checked and thankfully look the way they should right now."
Caleb died suddenly on Oct. 1, leaving his mom, Katie, his dad, Billy, and two sisters, Annie, 10, and Hayley, 7. While the teen's cause of death remained vague until Tuesday, the Bratayley family and their nearly 2 million subscribers on YouTube were rocked by his passing.
"The sadness of losing someone you love is unimaginable," Tuesday's update continued. "Thank you to everyone who has reached out, your kindness and support continues to help our family. We miss our baked potato everyday. #calebratelife #celebratelife."
On Oct. 9, the family broadcast his memorial service live on their various social media platforms. More than 40,000 people tuned in to witness the memorial, during which family members and close friends spoke affectionately about the teen.
One of Caleb's coaches recalled his sportsmanship. "Win, lose, or draw, he hit the field with the same intensity and drive. He was every coach’s dream player," said the coach, who identified himself as Daniel. "He was so fun. He was easygoing. He never asked for anything. He just went along with the flow and his smile was definitely contagious. He could light up a room."
