When you're an Oscar winner like Gwyneth Paltrow, it's easy to play the part of a happily married woman.
"She's been a great beard for me," her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, joked during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, airing Thursday. (Beards are used to conceal infidelity or a person's sexual orientation.)
Given that Martin, 34, and Paltrow, 39, have been married since 2003, host Ellen DeGeneres was caught off guard by his devilish answer. "It's not really a real relationship?" she asked. "She just pretends that she's your wife?"
"Yeah, it's hard to believe," the musician laughed. Martin then explained that before he met Paltrow, he had a hard time meeting women.
"I think a lot of people like me and Jonny [Buckland] join bands because we were really not doing so well," he explained.
"With women?" DeGeneres asked.
"With anyone!" Martin said.
Buckland, 34 — who is Apple's godfather — then joked: "I think the longest relationship we've had is together!"
