California Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. said Friday that his office is investigating an "illegal and massive prescription-drug ring" linked to the death of Corey Haim.

An unauthorized prescription under Haim's name was found while Brown's office was looking into fake prescription pads, believed to originate in San Diego.

"Corey Haim's death is yet another tragedy linked to the growing problem of prescription-drug abuse," Brown tells UsMagazine.com in a statement. "This problem is increasingly linked to criminal organizations ... It's a serious public health problem."

Haim died Wednesday at age 38.

Though his mother Judy has said he suffered pulmonary congestion, L.A. County Coroner Assistant Chief Ed Winter tells Us: "We did an autopsy. We gave his mother some preliminary findings but it does not mean it is the final cause of death. The final cause of death is pending toxicology and other reports. We did discuss issues involving his heart and lungs. We are not going to comment on specifics until the final results come back. It could be up to six weeks."

Haim's funeral will take place next week in his native Toronto.

I am so glad that they are cracking down on the drug ring. I hope they put someone in jail

  • March 15, 2010 - 9:49pm supergurrl

why is it that when a famous person dies its always a drug overdose? i think that the papers and or people should mind there own fuc&in own biz and not print anything before they now. im so sick of people making shi& up when they not now anything but what they have heard from other people. they need to leave corey's family and the other family's that have lost alone!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let he who is free from sin cast the first stone. Is everyone so squeaky clean that they can't show compassion for another human being? Then you my friend are sad indeed. May he rest in peace!

  • March 15, 2010 - 9:12am Mandy

I cannot believe some of you people. Do you not have any compassion? Lot's of people are addicts, not just famous people. Also for everyone saying go to rehab, its not free you know. If he was broke then he couldn't afford it. While I agree that more people should relize that these drugs are killing people who abuse them, addicts minds are wired differently. Lets hope that these deaths will save others.

Rumor has it that a certain power couple with lots of children - the woman being anorexic looking the man being more and more haggard every day - is also abusing the same type of drugs. Just google to find out.

  • March 14, 2010 - 11:11pm It's the Precription Drugs Stupid

Why are these drugs even being made since they K!LL soo many people. They stopped selling ephedra which has been used for thousands of years in Asia for weightloss and it never k!lled anyone. But they allow these drugs to continue to be made? They want us all d&ad people. Wake up and start caring.

  • March 14, 2010 - 11:08pm It's the Precription Drugs Stupid

Why would a ring be needed. All doctors do is try and prescribe as many prescriptions as humanely possible. Look at the average elderly person who can be on 30 or 40 drugs. They are killing people with this garbage. Some researchers say about 2 million U.S. citizens die a year from legally prescribed prescription drugs. These doctors belong in jail. At least most street drug dealers are people you know. With legal drug dealers, it's doctors who you can't sue, or the drug companies because the FDA protects them.

If what I've read is correct, Corey Haim's mother is currently undergoing cancer treatment. I know from personal experience that cancer treatment is very expensive, so it's absolutely conceivable that she can't afford his funeral expenses.

One minute I'm reading Corey Feldman's quote "they need to stop saying it's a drug overdose." and now the very next morning i'm reading about an "illegal and massive prescription-drug ring" . Hollywood is a better movie than most movies.

  • March 14, 2010 - 10:23am anon

Zoe, Pharmacists dont prescribe anything, they only dispense medication that DR's prescribe. TY, I agree with you 100%! It's his fault. So if the scrp was illegal, obviously he sought it out and got it in an illigal manner-his fault! -I cant feel bad for a broke dead junkie

  • March 14, 2010 - 10:22am suffernofools

incredible. every time one of these 'famous' people die of drug overdoses, it's always someone or something else's fault. never theirs, and god forbid anyone should call it like it is and say: hey, they f--ked up big time!! they were weak-minded and weak-willed and used their addiction as a crutch and an excuse as to why they couldnt get their sh-- together. addicts are the biggest and the best of manipulators when it comes to justifying their addictions. it's always 'pitypoormeboohoohooitsnotmyfault' just sickening.

  • March 14, 2010 - 5:31am TY

Now we live in a society where no one wants to take responsibility for their own actions. Instead of blaming this on Corey, they want to blame a "drug ring". No one forced him to take those drugs or become an addict. If anyone is to blame it's Corey.

  • March 14, 2010 - 1:15am Zoe

Corey Haim, Brittany Murphy, Heath Ledger.... all prescription drug deaths. Their addictions took a hard toll on their bodies. Also, shouldn't pharmacists be investigated somehow for over prescribing to know addicts?

  • March 13, 2010 - 1:00pm WHOOPIE WAS RIGHT

Does Heath Ledger mean anything .. or DJ ADAMS..drug related deaths too.. BOTH WERE PRESCRIPTION DRUG RELATED.. His mother should have a telethon on tv asking for donations for her son's funeral costs..since he did not use his money that he had in the eighties wisely

  • March 13, 2010 - 12:27pm bellaluna

Wow, some harsh comments. The bottom line is Corey was an addict. Lots of people are. That doesn't mean his family and friends don't deserve compassion. Don't you think family and friends of addicts suffer? They suffer when their loved ones are alive, worrying about their use, health, whether they'll beat their addiction or their addiction will beat them. Then they suffer when the addiction beats them.

  • March 13, 2010 - 10:55am Layla Rogers-Georgopoulos

Yeah, Corey messed up. The hold that drugs had on him was bigger than he was, but have some compassion people. I "grew up" with the Corey's and they were a big part of my childhood. As a pre-teen my walls were covered with the Corey's posters. I prayed that Corey Haim could beat the drugs, just as I pray now that close friends of mine can beat their own demons. As for the funeral, chill out. Don't donate if you don't want to, but remember he was a fellow human-being and he wasn't a bad guy, he just made bad choices.

  • March 13, 2010 - 10:50am monica

ok, i've heard enough about him. everyone knows what drugs do to you, prescription or not..if you do drugs, go to fricken rehab, if not, go away and die.

  • March 13, 2010 - 10:45am Jen

If they aren't going to comment until the results come back then why are they talking about his death being linked to an illegal prescription drug ring? His mother is suffering and the last thing she needs is to read that her son's death is linked to a drug ring! If they don't want to comment about the official cause of death then they shouldn't be talking publicly about this drug ring.

  • March 13, 2010 - 9:01am ggwtmne?

flo got it right. incinerate him here, take him home on the plane in the carry-on. real simple. the family need not embarrass themselves any further in whining for money to bury his sorry drug addled azz. slays me when these 'famous' people die from abusing themselves and then after the fact we are all supposed to cry and feel sorry for them and then pay for their freakin' funeral? please!!! let corey feldman pay for the funeral. doesn't he still have a 'career' of sorts? no? well, they can go mooch off the rest of gollywood for their money to bury him, since they all have no problems forking over money for haitians and other so called 'humanitarian' causes. corey haim never had as much fame while alive as he does now he is dead. what's with that??????? f--ked up is what it is.
