Donald Trump Totally Supports Kanye West’s Bid for President: “I Hope to Run Against Him Someday”

Trump and Kanye
Donald Trump weighed in on Kanye West's out-of-left-field VMAs announcement that he plans to run for president in 2020

Imagine the Saturday Night Live sketches! Donald Trump told Rolling Stone this week that he's totally in favor of Kanye West running for president in 2020 — especially if it means they get to run against each other.

In what may or may not be a legit proclamation, the rapper, 38, announced his bid for the White House on Sunday, Aug. 30, at the tail end of his 13-minute acceptance speech for MTV's Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2015 VMAs. Trump, 69 — who currently leads the polls for the GOP presidential nomination — was watching.

"I saw him do it, and I said, 'That's very interesting. I wonder who gave him that idea?'" the former Apprentice host told RS, also making note of VMAs host Miley Cyrus' quote that she was switching her vote from Trump to West.

"He's actually a different kind of person than people think," the real estate mogul added of the outspoken musician. "He's a nice guy. I hope to run against him someday."

Trump and West have had their differences before — back in 2009, the Republican front-runner told TMZ he wanted to boycott the rapper because of his incident with Taylor Swift at that year's VMAs — but those days seem to be behind them now.

"He said very nice things about me in the past. And he knows my daughter a little bit, Ivanka," the business magnate told Rolling Stone. "And he said very good things about me. Very, very good things. Extremely positive things."

Perhaps because West sees himself in the billionaire? As Jimmy Kimmel pointed out earlier this week, the two actually have a lot in common. Kimmel spliced together video clips of West's VMAs speech with other clips from Trump's time on the campaign trail, showing their many similarities.

"Somehow there are comparisons made so often, which is interesting — comparisons with Kanye and myself," Trump told RS. "I don't quite get it."

Indeed, Bill Maher drew a connection between the two back in June. "Here's the thing about Donald Trump: He never apologizes, he's never wrong, no matter what crazy thing he says. He's the white Kanye," the Real Time With Bill Maher host said at the time.
