FKA Twigs opened up in a new interview about her unusual stance on romance and said that she thinks emotional abuse can be “kind of sexy.”
Chatting with ES Magazine for their latest cover story, the British songbird, 28 — who is engaged to Robert Pattinson — revealed the personal connection she has to her music video for her 2013 single “Papi Pacify.” In the clip, a man appears to stick his fingers down Twigs’ throat, among other uncomfortable scenes.
“In the relationship I couldn’t communicate,” the pop star told the publication of an unidentified ex. “The person I was with was stopping me from explaining how I felt. So the physical manifestation is someone putting their hand in your mouth.”
She added: “But there’s an element, too, of liking that as well. It’s messed up. It’s addictive.”
The “Two Weeks” singer told ES that she finds the strong images in the “Papi Pacify” video to be “violent” yet “beautiful.”
“It’s kind of sexy, like emotional abuse can be tender. That’s why it’s messed up,” Twigs added. “If you are in an emotionally abusive relationship, it can be tender, that’s why you stay. And you stay because there’s a poorly part of your mind that likes it.”
Though she was game to revisit her troubled romantic past, Twigs was not keen on answering any questions about her current relationship with Pattinson, 30.
“Good luck with that,” she responded when pressed about the Twilight alum, who proposed in April 2015. “No questions. No chance. I’m not getting involved.”
