Gwen Stefani Reflects on Gavin Rossdale Split: ‘It’s Still Painful’

For Gavin Rossdale, this is what the truth feels like. The Bush rocker’s ex-wife, Gwen Stefani, gave yet another tell-all interview on Monday, April 4, detailing new information about the aftermath of their 2015 split on ABC’s Good Morning America.

“I felt like I was so … I was so kind of … I felt like … I can’t even find the words,” Stefani, 46, told Lara Spencer of their devastating breakup. “Oh, my God. I was embarrassed. Like, ‘I can’t go down. This is not who I am. I’m not going to fail.’ I had to make something good out of it, so I tried to write, because I know that that was my gift. And I was like, I’m gonna do this. I’m going to make this into music.”

Stefani reiterated that the process of making her third solo studio album, This Is What the Truth Feels Like, was cathartic. “It was magic. There was magic in the room. I was put in the studio by my label. I didn’t care about anything,” she said. “I was just literally trying to get up in the morning. I just want to write a record, and I don’t care about anything else except for getting this out and healing and being honest and real and truthful. I don’t care what style it is. Or being on the radio or charts, anything. Like, why would that matter to me at this point? Nothing matters except trying not to die.”

Her latest single, “Red Flag,” includes rather pointed lyrics like, “This is what happens when you don’t hear what your mother say … Big mistake, red flags fly / Right here, but I close my eyes / Carelessly, I let it slide / A little late warning signs / Punish me, I let it slide.” (After the couple announced their split in August 2015, Us Weekly broke the news that the root of their breakup was infidelity. Sources told Us that Stefani had discovered risqué texts exchanged between Rossdale and their ex-nanny Mindy Mann in February 2015, and found out that he had cheated throughout her pregnancy with their youngest son, Apollo.)

“I think we all find that there’s red flags that we ignore in our lives,” Stefani told GMA on Monday. “And so that was kind of that one for me.”

Though Stefani went on to find love with her Voice costar Blake Shelton, she admitted in her latest interview that she’s still healing after Rossdale.

“It’s still painful. I’m looking at the pieces and going, what is happening?” Stefani confessed. “There’s so many great things, but it’s still super hard to have your family break up. What do you do after that? Here we are, we’re doing it.”

The No Doubt frontwoman has been dating Shelton since last October — the couple broke the news to Us Weekly first — and he inspired her hit “Make Me Like You.”

“That song was one of my favorites to write. It just came out,” she dished. “I had been feeling that way. It’s just exactly what I felt that day … I miss you right now, here it is. Everybody in the room was kind of, like, whoa, this is happening right now. It was written fast — 10, 15 minutes the whole thing just done.”
