Get well soon! Here Comes Honey Boo Boo star Kaitlyn Cardwell recently underwent surgery to remove the extra thumb she was born with, TMZ reported on Sunday, October 23.
According to the news outlet, Kaitlyn (who is Mama June Shannon‘s 4-year-old granddaughter and Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell‘s daughter) is “healthy and recovering” after the procedure, which will require her to wear a cast for six months.
In August, Anna, 22, revealed that after much discussion, she made the decision to have the preschooler’s third thumb removed to avoid potential medical issues and bullying.
“I know a few people will be mad but we have made a decision on what to do [with] Kaitlyn’s thumb,” she wrote on Facebook on August 11. “We have decided to remove it cause of school and because we don’t know what it will do to her when she is older and cause of kids these days of how mean they are and they don’t care not saying all kids are like that but some are but surgery is in October and I can tell everyone now I am going to be a wreck cause I know she is going to be scared but I just hope and pray everything will go well and she will be okay.”
As Honey Boo Boo fans know, Kaitlyn was born in July 2012 with four fingers and two thumbs on her right hand. The abnormality was often a topic on the family’s TLC reality show, which was canceled in October 2014 after Mama June, 37, allegedly rekindled her romance with a registered sex offender following her split from Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson.
In a September 2012 episode of the hit show, Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson infamously joked about her niece’s extra digit, telling the cameras, “I wish I had an extra finger [so] then I could grab more cheese balls.” (Relive the hilarious quote in the video above!)
Last December, Kaitlyn became a big sister when mom Anna welcomed daughter Kylee, now 10 months, with her husband, Michael Cardwell.
