Jack Riley Dead: ‘The Bob Newhart Show’ and ‘Rugrats’ Actor Was 80

Jack Riley, the actor best known for playing neurotic patient Elliot Carlin on The Bob Newhart Show, has passed away. He was 80.

Riley died in Los Angeles on Friday, August 19, after battling pneumonia and an infection, his wife, Ginger Lawrence, told Deadline.

The actor also voiced Stu Pickles on Rugrats.

Following his run on the Bob Newhart Show, which premiered in September 1972 and ran for six seasons, Riley guest starred on comedies and dramas including M*A*S*H, Mary Tyler Moore and Happy Days, Cannon, Columbo and Police Woman.

He also starred in movies High Anxiety, History of the World, Part 1 and Spaceballs.

Beginning in the 1990s, the actor voiced Stu Pickles, the dad of Tommy and Dil on Nickelodeon’s Rugrats. After appearing in more than 140 episodes of the cartoon, Riley again voiced the character for all three Rugrats movies and sequel series All Grown Up!

He is survived by his two children and wife Ginger.
