It's a small world after all! Jennifer Garner was leaving the gym on Wednesday, April 24, when she nearly collided with pal Tobey Maguire. But both stars were so distracted -- he with his 3-year-old son, Otis; she with her phone -- that neither one noticed the other as they passed on the street in Santa Monica, Calif.

Dressed for a workout in black cropped leggings and a green T-shirt, Garner, 40, appeared hyper-focused on something she was reading on her screen. Maguire, meanwhile, had his hands full with Otis and Otis' accoutrements. (The Spider-Man actor was juggling a firetruck-shaped lunch box, a kid-sized blue parka, a water bottle, and a book -- all under one arm.)

It seems clear the busy pals simply didn't realize they were walking next to one another. Their families are close friends; Garner and husband Ben Affleck have often been spotted with Maguire and wife Jennifer Meyer. Last year, the couples and their kids even met up at a Halloween carnival in Malibu. (The Affleck-Garner brood was decked out in Wizard of Oz costumes, with 7-year-old Violet in the role of Dorothy, 4-year-old Seraphina as the Scarecrow, and 14-month-old Samuel as the Cowardly Lion. Coincidentally -- or not -- Maguire's daughter Ruby also channeled Dorothy.)

Garner has really bonded with other working moms and dads in Hollywood. The Odd Life of Timothy Green actress even belongs to a Malibu moms carpool with Dancing With the Stars co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet.

"[Jennifer] is very normal," Burke-Charvet told Us Weekly exclusively earlier this month. "And she and I carpool together -- so I trust her!"
