Jim Carrey's lawyer is slamming a new lawsuit that claims the actor gave his late girlfriend, Cathriona White, three types of sexually transmitted diseases in 2013.
As previously reported, the makeup artist died at the age of 30 of a drug overdose on September 28, 2015. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office ruled it a suicide.
White's estranged husband, Mark Burton, initially filed a lawsuit on Monday, claiming that Carrey, 54, provided her the prescription drugs that contributed to her death. Burton filed revised documents on Thursday, now alleging that Carrey gave her STDs.
Carrey's attorney Marty Singer called the latest claims "baseless," "bogus" and a "transparent shakedown."
Furthermore, Singer claimed that text messages between Carrey and White will prove that Burton's allegations are false. "The alleged text messages referred to were sent in 2013, yet in November of 2014, Ms. White sought out my client and asked him to continue a serious relationship. If he had engaged in the alleged horrible conduct, why would she reach out and request that they continue to stay together?" he told Us. "In fact, they were even working out a cohabitation agreement, as they were living together for the most part up until her death."
The Dumb and Dumber To actor and White dated on and off from 2012 to 2015 and split one week before she passed away. She left him a suicide note, and he later helped to carry her coffin at her funeral, which was held at her hometown of Cappawhite in Tipperary, Ireland.
