The same day he apologized for using the N-word and blabbing to Playboy about his sexcapades with Jessica Simpson, John Mayer broke down on stage.

While performing his tune "Gravity" Wednesday at Nashville's Sommet Center, Mayer, 32, stopped playing and apologized to his bandmates, some of whom were African-American.

"In the quest to be clever," he began, "I completely forgot about the people that I love and that love me."

He then said that he had entered a world of "selfishness and greediness and arrogance." He said that he thought if he could just be "speedy and witty and pull together as many fast words and phrases as I could, that I would be clever enough to buy myself another day without anybody pinning me down and saying, 'You're a creep.'

"I should have just given that up and played the guitar," he went on. "I didn't. So I decided I would try to be as clever as possible all the time, and I did that at the expense of people that I love and that feels absolutely terrible.

Remember these star scandals?

"I think it's important that you know that everybody on this stage is here playing with me not because they condone what I say in any interview ... they're on this stage because they support myself as a possible future grown-up," he continued as the audience cheered.

Mayer then got choked up.

With his voice cracking, he told the crowd, "And maybe they see something that I don't. So maybe I need to take a break from trying to be clever and spend a little time looking at what they see -- because they've done an unbelievable thing by standing on this stage and standing by my side playing tonight.

"It's just not worth being clever," he said, adding: "I quit the media game. I'm out. I'm done. I just want to play my guitar."

He then thanked the band again for standing by him.

After a lengthy pause, he began playing guitar solo.

Intern Adam of Nashville's 107.5 The River tells UsMagazine.com Mayer was "very quiet and closed off" backstage. "His Nashville buddies who came to say hi and give him support were left hanging for hour without a glimpse of John," adds Adam.

After the show, Mayer Twittered: "I just wanted to play the guitar for people. Everything else just sort of popped up and I improvised, and kept doubling down on it..."

Tammy: I don't think you should be like that because he could have just gone on with his life and not apologized. But he did apologized, so please give him a break. And if you don't like his music, don't listen to it

this shows how phony kelly clarkson, pink, and the rest of them who criticised kanye west. for them to say nothing about john mayer racist comments is wrong.

John Mayer is a maggot! Who cares if he does not like black women, that's not the point. It's the words he used. He is just another stupid pop star. There is nothing "blues" about his music. If anyone thinks it is ok to support someone who refers to himself as David Duke, decay in hell with this maggot! It's 2010, we needed to have no tolerance for racism. We are all in this world together so get over it! It's Playboy, a trash magazine. Only a trash magazine would even print such crap! Who cares about Playboy and what the writer thinks! It's all trash, just like Mayer.

Some of you are total idiots! He was not drunk during the interview and you cannot compare this to Kayne West, two totally different things. What does rappers have to do with John Mayer saying the "n" word and calling his penis a white supremacist? Only a racist would refer to themselves as a white supremacist. He only did the on stage " I'm sorry" to save his bank account. I hope radio and TV will now give Jonny Lang and Rob Pattinson more coverage. I will never understand how Mayer can be so popular and not Lang and Pattinson.

  • February 13, 2010 - 2:02pm Jen

At least he realizes the error of his ways. Just keep on playing your guitar and keep your mouth shut..good idea John!

I have no pity for him so-called breaking down on stage. JMayer only stated his true feelings after hiding them all these yearsâ?¦I was never a fan of his anyways. Now he â??HADâ?? to apologize only to do damage control, it was not from his heartâ?¦then again, he would have never ever said it (racist remark) had it not been in his heart to begin with. Where is Kanye West when he is really needed?, Kanye, this is who you need to be targeting next out in publicâ?¦â?¦.

john mayer should pay for his racist comments. he should be locked up or better yet forced to listen to his music.

  • February 12, 2010 - 2:00pm JimCrow

I agree with Lisa - he's no more racist than Kanye West and the rest of the asinine black youth who scream, rap, and kill eachother.

  • February 12, 2010 - 6:29am Lisa

I kind of feel bad for the guy. I think too much is being made of this interview. Playboy probably got him all liquored up.

  • February 12, 2010 - 3:28am Suli

He seems self-loathing, immature and insecure. I feel badly for JS and his bandmates. Hopefully he will take a time out and change his bad behavior. He is a great musician, but his off-putting personality and racism overshadow his talent.

boo-fahqn-hoo: now we have to put up w/his attempt at sincerity? yuck.

  • February 12, 2010 - 1:15am konatakete

Obviously, he is kindda a guy who talked too much and malighed women with whom he used to spend time.No doubt, he is such a lunatic guy.He would rather to hold his tongue and keep his eyes on his job.

  • February 12, 2010 - 1:04am Lee

He's learning from Papa Joe Simpson - media manipulation!

  • February 12, 2010 - 12:16am Diana

That's it loser boy. Just play your guitar and keep your mouth closed because every time you speak, CRAP comes out of it. You're a little too old to be making yourself look and sound so foolish. Keeping your mouth shut might be a start.

  • February 11, 2010 - 10:57pm kiwijen

John Mayer you are an absolute idiot and I don't buy your BS at all, most likely another publicity stunt..

  • February 11, 2010 - 10:50pm Kimba

I agree with meetingrich...the kanye west incident was blown out of proportion, the media is still angry with him, he never used profanity, talked about women in a demeaning fashion, comparing sex to drugs! Totally inapropriate! There needs to be a back lash against John Mayer, he deserves it. Kelly Clarkson has commented on everything else including the Kanye West incident, comment on the John Mayer incident Kelly Clarkson!

  • February 11, 2010 - 10:44pm Terri

What a putz! Mayer is such a dork and will hopefully realize what a witch Karma can be when it comes back around!

  • February 11, 2010 - 10:25pm vlcm

No matter what, he still plays a mean guitar

  • February 11, 2010 - 9:58pm Elaine

Stop twitting John! You'll feel better.
