Andiamo! Kanye West and Kim Kardashian will celebrate their wedding at the Forte di Belvedere in Florence, Italy, on Saturday, May 24, the Florence City Council confirms to Us Weekly. The stars have rented the historic and stunning 16th century fortress—known to locals as the Belvedere—as one of the venues for their special weekend.
The breathtaking venue was built by the powerful Medici family's Grand Duke Ferdinando I, who commissioned Bernardo Buontalenti to design the structure in 1590. The ruler used the fort to flee from epidemics and when the city was under siege.
Though the star-shaped fortress served as a shelter from attack, the villa within was built to be a residential place of luxury and elegance. Today, the venue offers sweeping panoramic views and hosts art exhibitions, as well as concerts.
The Forte di Belvedere is temporarily closed to the public as they begin to prepare for the star-studded event. The city confirms it cost the couple 300,000 euros (approximately $410,000) to rent the space.
For the West-Kardashian wedding, L.A.-based Italian artist Vanessa Beecroft was tapped to fill the abandoned fort with her own installations and sculptures. Beecroft, who will also be a guest at the wedding, oftentimes creates artwork that involves nudes.
The 36-year-old rapper told Florence's La Nazione newspaper on Friday, May 16, why he picked the Renaissance's cultural epicenter as his wedding destination. "I adore Florence," the My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy hitmaker shared.
"I love Italy and the Italian lifestyle. To tell you the truth, I already came to the banks of the Arno [river] with Kim last year, just the two of us, incognito." He went on to share, "I think that our daughter North was conceived here among the Renaissance masterpieces."
As previously reported, the stars are making their wedding weekend a multi-city affair.
