We live in different times now. Remember when Kim Kardashian was best known as Paris Hilton’s BFF, was fighting off rumors linking her to Nick Lachey and organized celebrities’ closets for a living?
In the February/March 2007 issue of Complex magazine, the mother of two opened up about all of these things and more in what turned out to be the first of many magazine cover shoots.
In the accompanying interview, the socialite rated her skills in bed “20, on a scale of one to ten,” and referred to herself as “Princess Kim” during the interview.
“[The biggest misconception is] that we’re all trust-fund kids and we have it so easy,” she told the magazine at the time. “If anything, I find it the complete opposite. I know people think we drive around in these nice cars and we do whatever we want and our parents will pay our credit cards, but that’s not the case. Sure my parents were generous; I got a nice car at 16, but at 19 I was cut off. I’ve worked really hard. I opened the store myself. Even Paris and Nicole [Richie] — they’re completely independent too.”
At the time, she counted Hilton, Richie, Brandy and Brittny Gastineau among her closest friends, and listed skydiving, skiing and going to parties among her favorite pastimes. The reality star also referred to herself as “a really outdoorsy sports person.”
“I love to go on trips,” she said. “I remember, I used to tell one of my really good friends, Brandy — the singer Brandy — you know she has every purse and shoe and every outfit. I’d be like, ‘Let’s not buy a $5,000 bag for once and let’s go on vacation.’”
The Keeping Up With the Kardashians star, now 35, also denied that she had made a sex tape with her then-boyfriend Ray J. Months later, when news broke that the exes did indeed have a tape that was leaked to the public, Kardashian fessed up.
“My dad would’ve been mortified and I’m not happy about it,” she said of the scandal in a follow-up interview with Complex. “You know, I thought I was gonna marry this guy [Ray J]; we were in a three-year relationship. I didn’t think that our personal business would be for the world to see, and frankly it was so many years ago and there were so many different vacations that we’ve gone on that were taped that are all being meshed together to this one tape that they made. I don’t even remember the things that I say and I do in our personal stuff from years ago. It’s humiliating. So no, I would not think twice to – I don’t think that this will come out as something positive for me.”
Kardashian, who tied the knot with longtime love Kanye West in 2014 and now has two kids, was romantically linked to Nick Cannon, Nick Lachey and the Game in 2007, but spoke out about wanting to be single for a bit.
“Me and Paris and the girls are trying to stay single for one year,” she told the publication. “In March, that’ll be up. I’m a relationship kind of girl, but I think that everyone needs a year in their life to be single.” (Kardashian would go on to marry NBA player Kris Humphries in 2011, but famously file for divorce just 72 days later.)
The Selfish author was 26 years old at the time of the interview, and Keeping Up With the Kardashians premiered later that year.
