Kristin Cavallari: A Producer Bribed ‘The Hills’ Cast to Say I Did Drugs (Exclusive)

Was it worth it? In honor of the 10th anniversary of The Hills‘ MTV debut on May 31, 2006, Kristin Cavallari opens up exclusively in the new issue of Us Weekly and reveals that a producer once bribed her castmates to say that she had an issue with substance abuse.

As fans will recall, Cavallari, now 29, joined the iconic reality series in 2009 in the middle of its fifth season after its original leading lady, Lauren Conrad, exited the show.

Upon her entry into the world of Justin Bobby and Speidi, the Laguna Beach alum tells Us that a producer wanted to amp up her story line. To make that happen, Cavallari says that the producer told her costars that if they said she did drugs on camera, they would be rewarded with designer duds.

“One of the producers bribed Lo [Bosworth], Audrina [Patridge] and Stephanie [Pratt] and promised them he would buy them presents if they called me out on camera for doing drugs,” she recounts.

According to the reality star turned fashion designer, Bosworth, now 29, went in on the offer.

“Then Lo said, ‘Can I have a Birkin bag?’ She never ended up getting the Birkin. You need to get that s–t in writing!” K.Cavs continues. “It ended with all of the girls and I, our managers, agents, producers and lawyers in a room. I was told it wasn’t going to be a story line, and sure enough, it was on the first episode [of season 6].”

While she took issue with her purported problem with drugs, the one-time actress was happy to play the bad girl character that Hills producers outlined for her.

“I’m glad I went back to it because this time I looked at it strictly as a job and I knew the character they wanted to play, and so I went into it with a completely different attitude and I had the time of my life,” the Balancing in Heels author explains. “I thought it was a ton of fun to play up the villain character and I kept my life completely separate, so I had The Hills life and my personal life.”

“So the lines didn’t get blurred between what was real and what was fake,” she adds to Us. “And that was what made it a really enjoyable experience.”
