Another season of splits? Hollywood’s top divorce attorney Laura Wasser spilled some of her celebrity secrets to Bloomberg Businessweek in a new profile published Wednesday, March 2.
Wasser, 47, who’s known as “the Disso Queen” for handling numerous high-profile divorce cases, has an impressive client roster that includes Heidi Klum, Angelina Jolie, Britney Spears, Maria Shriver and all three of the Kardashian daughters, Kim, Kourtney and Khloé. And the demand for her services is only growing.
The story hints that there are celebrities headed for splitsville this spring. “Several [of Wasser’s current cases] will be filed in March, after the Oscars,” it notes. “Her clients didn’t want to walk the red carpet alone.”
Wasser dished details about some of her clients — while keeping their identities under wraps, of course — and was incredibly blunt with Bloomberg about their charmed lives. During the interview, the attorney revealed that one of her wealthiest clients likes to complain when she has custody of her kids on weekends because it requires work. “I’m like, ‘That sounds like every weekend to me,'” Wasser cracked. “‘Also, you have no job.’”
Then there’s another client who wanted to start a custody battle with her ex-husband after he fed their vegan kid a hamburger. “Vegans, man,” Wasser told the publication with an eye roll. “I’m sorry, but no judge is going to take away custody because you gave the kid In-N-Out.”
The savvy celebrity lawyer also revealed she has a strategy for covertly submitting paperwork. The writer explains: “When Wasser has several clients she knows will wind up on the cover of Us Weekly no matter what she does, she submits their cases together, so media attention will be diluted.”
At the time Wasser was interviewed, the attorney was working on a whopping 45 cases, many of them divorce-related. With the high level of clientele, Wasser will submit paperwork en masse at branch offices (such as Santa Barbara) in an attempt to deflect leaks, according to the article.
Wasser added to Bloomberg Businessweek: “I’ll tell my clients, ‘I have someone else, I can’t say who, but you should really wait and file at the same time.” Many outlets have wondered why there were so many celebrity splits last summer. USA Today pointed out in a story that Gwen Stefani’s split from Gavin Rossdale in August was preceded by Jennifer Garner’s separation announcement from Ben Affleck in June. It turns out the timing was impeccable. Both Stefani and Garner are Wasser’s clients.
Despite the high number of cases she tackles, Wasser has a positive outlook about marriage. “I don’t want you to think I’m anti-love, because I’m not,” she explained. “I know plenty of people with wonderful, lifelong marriages.”
