Lawyer for Bill Cosby’s Alleged Victim Andrea Constand Reacts to Sexual Assault Charges Against Comedian

Bill Cosby‘s accuser Andrea Constand, who alleged that the comedian assaulted her in 2004, reacted to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office’s decision to file second-degree felony charges against the beleaguered TV star on Wednesday, December 30.

Cosby, 78, was charged on Wednesday in Pennsylvania with aggravated indecent assault in Constand’s 2004 case, which falls within the state’s 12-year statute of limitations. He was arraigned on Wednesday, and freed after posting $1 million bail. After the DA’s press conference about the investigation, Constand, 42, released a statement through her attorney Dolores Troiani.

“On behalf of our client, Andrea Constand, we wish to express our appreciation to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, the County Detectives and the Cheltenham Police Department for the consideration and courtesy they have shown Andrea during this difficult time,” the statement from Troiani read. “We have the utmost confidence in [First Assistant District Attorney] Mr. [Kevin] Steele, Ms. Feden and their team, who have impressed us with their professionalism. In that this matter is now being pursued in the criminal justice system, we will not comment further.”

Constand accused Cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting her at his home back in 2004, when she was employed by Temple University in Philadelphia as the director of operations for the women’s basketball team. According to Constand, she became friendly with Cosby, a Temple alum, and he mentored her prior to the alleged incident.

However, when Constand went to authorities initially, the district attorney in Montgomery County at the time did not press charges against the Cosby Show star. In 2014, Constand, now a resident of Toronto, went to Canadian authorities to alert them about the alleged assault, and they then reached out to authorities in Pennsylvania.

While the case was settled in 2006, the fallout continued nearly a decade later. In 2014, comedian Hannibal Buress made a joke about the accusations against Cosby during a stand-up routine in his native Philly. Following the viral moment, many additional women, including ’80s supermodels Janice Dickinson and Beverly Johnson, came forward claiming that Cosby had assaulted them too.

Constand’s attorney added to the Associated Press on Wednesday: “She feels that they believe her, and, to any victim, that is foremost in your mind: Are people going to believe me.”

Cosby’s lawyer Monique Pressley, however, has denied the allegations, and filed a defamation lawsuit on his behalf against seven of his accusers on Monday, December 14, for “their malicious, opportunistic, false, and defamatory accusations of sexual misconduct against him.”
