What are friends for, if not to publicly ridicule you at a fancy event in your honor? Matthew Broderick got the celebrity roast treatment from pal Martin Short on Monday, March 9, when Short took the stage at Sotheby's in New York to introduce him as one of four esteemed recipients of the 2015 Guild Hall Academy of the Arts Lifetime Achievement Awards.

"It is an absolute thrill for me to have been asked to honor my dear friend Matthew Bashar al-Assad Broderick," Short, 64, began his speech (via Hamptons news site 27east.com), humorously comparing the actor, 52, to the current president of Syria.

"It's actually more than a thrill," he continued. "It's a complete and utter obligation. When you do eight shows a week with someone, nothing's more thrilling than to have your day off with a coworker." (Short and Broderick are currently starring together in the Broadway show It's Only a Play.)

According to Page Six, the Father of the Bride alum went on to quip that Broderick resembles a "bouncer at a lesbian bar." He also teased that the Producers star was a little obsessed with himself, joking, "When you visit his home, you can't help but wonder, 'How many portraits can one man sit for?'"

Short ended the speech on a more sincere note, praising Broderick's many contributions to TV, film, and theater.

"From the bottom of where my heart should be, let me say, you are a breathtakingly brilliant, staggering original who has and continues to inspire in a career spanning over 30 years," he said (via 27east). "You have accomplished more than I'm sure you ever dreamed of accomplishing, and you have done it with talent and tenacity and skill and wisdom and, again, a deep, deep originality."
