Matt McGorry Dishes on His “Tight-Assed” OITNB Character, How to Get Away With Murder

Matt McGorry is everywhere these days — Orange Is the New Black, How to Get Away With Murder, and now, Us Weekly‘s New York City offices! The charming (and oh-so-hunky) actor, 28, stopped by for a chat on Wednesday, Oct. 29, and dished to Us entertainment director Ian Drew about his Netflix and ABC characters, among other things.

Speaking about his OITNB alter ego, corrections officer John Bennett, McGorry said he found out only after he’d filmed his first episode that John would have a prosthetic leg. (He lost it because of an infection he contracted in a dirty hot tub, but he tells everyone he lost it during a tour of duty in Afghanistan.)

“I think the manifestation of the character — his kind of emotional state and how he is in the world, I think he can be sort of afraid or timid or awkward — probably creates a certain walk that I wasn’t even necessarily conscious of,” he mused to Us of his “tight-assed” strut. “And I think when you find out that he has the prosthetic leg, it kind of lends itself to that.”

McGorry also gave Us a peek inside the mind of his HTGAWM character, first-year law student Asher Millstone, who has a reputation as a cocky, spoiled bro. “I think, in general, the douchiest people are often the most insecure,” he explained of Asher’s motivations. “I think a lot of times, it’s so deeply ingrained in them that you would be hard-pressed to ever really have a moment where they revealed that to you.”

He added: “You see the light peek through just very briefly, in terms of the vulnerability or the deeper self.”
